Happy Katla Day!
I’ve been lucky enough to get to spend some quality time in my studio with the incredible @genkiinstruments Katla synthesizer. After hearing this synth at Superbooth and Machina Bristronica last year, I had very high expectations. And I’m pleased to say that Katla easily exceeds these expectations; it’s the absolute dream synth for composers who are in to synthesis, and I absolutely need one in my studio permanently.
In the period of time I got to spend with Katla (thank you so much Genki!) music just came pouring out of this breathtaking synth. So I recorded quite a few videos with it, I’ll be sharing them here soon. These video’s are also up on the Genki YouTube channel, if you already want to have a look at what’s to come.
Katla is shipping as of today, huge congrats to the Genki team for getting this beauty out ❤️

NEW VIDEO! Live on my YT channel now is an interview with the CEO of @genkiinstruments on how they designed the KATLA polysynth - a volcanic synth at a premium price.
In the background while we were recording they were running Hackney Half Marathon 😂 - I de-noised this to death because for us it sounded like being inside a cowbell with added whooping and cheering.
I found Óli really frank and insightful about this process and I think there are a lot of valuable lessons in it.

With a sound like this, melodies just come pouring out ❤️ The movement in this patch comes from routing Katla’s LFO to its phase distortion, which sounds different than modulating the filter. So many on panel options to create moving and characterful sounds on Katla! I named this little piece ‘Closing Credits’, hope you like it.

Making a techno build-up with Katla 🌋
This synth has so much character and as you can see in the video it is really performative! The sliders really makes it easy to overlook and to change things on the fly.

Time for a new video on the mighty @genkiinstruments Katla! ❤️ While last rays of a setting sun were hitting my living room window, I was playing around with Katla’s stereo CMOS distortion, and this beautiful gloomy pad emerged. You can drive Katla in no less than four different places. This took a little getting used to for me, but it makes for a super flexible synth engine. I’ve never heard internal drive sound this good on a synthesizer.
