Can I be honest about something I think the non-alc industry is doing completely wrong?
Over the past several months, I’ve noticed a concerning trend of non-alc retailers and bottle shops struggling, many even closing their doors.
Look, I get it. Everybody wants to get into Target, Walmart, Total Wine. That’s growth. That’s how brands survive. Investors are happy.
But these big box shops don’t care about the category. They are only buying in now, years later, because alcohol sales are slumping. They will pivot to just about anything to make a buck.
Is this really what we want to be celebrating?
It’s the independent non-alc bottle shops and their customers that helped build this category in the first place.
Why not equally celebrate launching in a Generation NA, a Killjoy, Cheeky & Dry, Burdon of Proof, The Open Road? There are so many great shops out there. I’ll tag some of my favorites including my Indiana peeps in the comments.
And if you’re not sure where to go, check out Zero Proof Nation’s map created by Laura Silverman. Her collab with Ian Blessing and All the Bitter last year was a perfect example of how to support us small retailers.
We’re the ones introducing new customers to the category.
Answering questions.
Doing the tastings.
Making recommendations.
And helping people find something they genuinely love instead of just grabbing whatever happens to be on a shelf.
And here’s the part nobody talks about:
When the non-alc shops disappear, the category loses its biggest advocates.
Because brands promoting themselves is just not the same.
Dude, it’s honestly like giving yourself a 5-star review.
It means soooo much more when it comes from someone independent.
Someone who’s tasted it all.
Someone who isn’t just trying to move product to hit a sales quota, but that actually understands the category.
That’s what shops like ours do.
