My grandpa George Collar was a carpenter, a WWII pilot, a super grandpa, and yeah a little cantankerous at times. We pal’d around a lot together when I was a kid. He’d take me on handyman jobs, we’d watch ballgames on TV and make up fake names for players (Hel Mall was a favorite), drive to Lake Erie on Saturday mornings to make sure it was still there, and steal pennies from grandma’s bingo kit.
When he died over 20 years ago I took a few mementos to remember him by - his folding ruler and two custom made wool suits, one made in Buffalo and the other in Ashtabula. I’ve had those suits ever since then, not quite sure what to do with them.
A couple of months ago I asked my friend Margaret @zephyrlineworkshop if it would be possible to make cycling caps out of the suits. So we got together to look at the material and talk through possibilities. Not only was she on board, she found makers mark patches throughout the suits and talked about making them part of the caps. Then we talked about stitching GEO, the marker my grandpa used to signify his tools, into the fabric. A red, white, and blue ribbon symbolizes his service as a Flying Tiger, flying over the hump in WWII.
Tonight Margaret gave me the finished caps and I am staggered by their perfection. Thank you, Margaret!
Grandpa Collar brought me along on his adventures.
Now I get to share some of my journey with him.
Can’t wait to ride with you grandpa ❤️
I’m excited to share new work and a few new ideas at East Ave Gallery, opening June 6 from noon-5pm. As this body of work has evolved I’ve been thinking a lot about companionship, the special messiness of relationships, how the simple act of talking and listening elicits joy / challenge / insight, playfulness, doing things the wrong way for the right reason.

Penland School of Craft. A week of creative immersion on a 400 acre campus full of natural beauty, dedicated people, and limitless art making facilities. Words fail to express my full experience, but this video of riding into the campus reminds me of the serene setting and the crackling energy that permeates it.
