This topic has been on my mind a lot this week and I’m not sure why but it kind of all just came together in a little something something 💕 a little bit different for me! Text: “as long as the baby is healthy” were told But what does that mean if it wasn’t quite so Does the journey stop before it grows? Is the life not as worthy as those who fit the mould? I am the baby deemed not quite healthy Who turned into a woman who enjoys life freely A cosy home full of food that’s mine With a loyal dog sitting by my side Friends and family with so many memories Laughter and grief beautifully blended I am the baby deemed not quite healthy Yet still I love life, full and plenty

I think it’s time for a re-introduction (now we’ve hit 20k 😱🥲), don’t you? ✨ So, I’m Gem - in my early 30’s who shares life as a wheelchair user. I find people interesting, funny and sometimes bloody baffling which I share in my sarcastic videos. I started my career in education after graduating Leeds Uni in 2014 where I was a student sabbatical [equality and diversity] officer for 2 years. I really found my identity there and learned how to advocate for not only myself but others too. It was there I decided to start a blog telling funny stories about the weird and wonderful things non disabled people would say to me when I was out and about. This blog grew into instagram and other socials which then slowly snowballed into freelancing consulting around disability and my lived experience. 9 years later I’m full time doing exactly what I’ve dreamed of not just in the UK but other countries too! I dabble in… 💖 public speaking 💖 content creating 💖 consulting Anyway, through this page and my other socials - I try and show the realities of being a wheelchair user. The little big wins of finally finding an accessible home at 27, using the train, going on planes or even just trying to crochet a bloody magic circle. Iykyk. 🧶 I like to share top tips around independence and accessibility. But I also like to talk about feelings, ableism and trying to keep up with a world where disabled people aren’t thought about a lot of the time which I’ve recently spoken more about, realising it takes up a lot of my brain space. Other than disability I’m probably putting the kettle on for a brew in my (very pink) kitchen or sharing my latest snack finds. Anyway, I’ll leave it there now, but thanks for being here 🥰 📸 @thehappybrandphotographer

Disability and children’s reactions… it’s natural to be inquisitive - let’s not set the tone for them to fear disability. I know it’s easier said than done in the moment though 🫣 #disability #children #wheelchair #parenting

and the award for inclusive fashion season of the year goes to… 🌼🏆 text in images: Why spring is my time to shine for fashion Short sleeves everywhere Fabric is less restrictive Lots of jackets are cropped And then I’ll wear them all year round! You may notice I do shop fast fashion sometimes as honestly being 3foot1 is sometimes hard to find things to feel good in but I’m trying to go to charity shops more now and honestly I’ve been finding some winners!! #fashion #wheelchair #disability

It was a privilege to attend the Scope awards yesterday 💜 There’s something very special about being in a room with people who all feel as passionate about inclusion and accessibility as each other. Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners 🏆 and big thanks to the team for inviting me to such a wonderful event ✨ Oh and lots of people are asking so dress is from @nextofficial 🤓

I know how hard it is to find step free places to get content and professional photos, so I’m so chuffed Charlie reached out to me ✨ {gifted shoot} Not only are the images fab but it’s sooo convenient when it’s right at the heart of Leeds City Centre in @leedscornex - can’t wait to come back soon! 🙌🏼 Huge thank you to @itstorit for coming with me and capturing the day, too!
