Last summer, Jacob Miller @thejacobmillershow traveled the world and visited countless thrift shops to find out how thrift shops can do better, save more from the landfill and raise more funds for the charities. We reached out to Jacob to ask what were the biggest lessons they learned during their travels – how can thrift shops do better? 💎 The biggest lessons Jacob learned 💎 * The textile waste and overconsumption problem is uncomprehensible in its huge proportions; we can all play our part by shopping reuse.  * Charities need to step up and compete with mainstream resellers/thirfters/consignment stores or they will loose their market share. * Innovation and sector collaboration support everyone to turn to reuse and drive greater profitability  * Customer experience is often forgotten in thrifting environments and is critical to sales growth. Customer experience should be coupled with maintaining the quirks and uniqueness this is what drives people to thrift stores. Not over standardization.   * Donations are plentiful when donors are presented with convenience or reward.    💎HOW THRIFT SHOPS CAN GROW THEIR SALES 💎 * Understand your customer: are you catering to a hedonist/fun shopper or a utilitarian/speed shopper * Build a fun and engaging brand that connects and builds relationships with customers * Increase your rotation speed and invest in creative team members to support curation * Focus on your customer experience, what inhibits them, what makes it easier for them, what delights them * Connection with other thrift stores, host events and find alternate reasons for customers to come to you.  * Build in placemaking initiatives so you become a third space for community and increase your dwell time beyond transactions.  What do you think? Many of these thoughts apply to curated vintage spaces too! “I fell in love with Japanese fashion in 2010 when one of my art teachers at school was telling me about Comme des Garçons. I had trouble pronouncing the name so I did some research into the label and was addicted ever since!”, says stylist @stuart_walford “I love how expressive the Japanese clothes are, how they make you feel when you wear them, how thoughtful the designs are, and of course I love the process of finding the pieces. My favourite places to shop vintage here in Melbourne are Bruce, dot.comme, Reina, and Salon Archive. My holy grail item: I am still looking for the glitter basketball shorts from Homme Plus SS18, any colour! A lot of other pieces come to mind, too, but they’re at the top of the list.” Head over to gem.app and read more on Gem Stories, our weekly newsletter! #vintagecollector #commedesgarçons #japanesevintage #vintagecommedesgarcons #melbournestylist

Thea Grant runs a vintage jewelry store in Dumbo, Brooklyn together with her husband Nico. For this week’s Gem Story, Thea showed some turquoise jewelry pieces from the store’s collection. “Turquoise varies widely in appearance. Some stones are pure, even blue, while others contain a visible matrix—veins of other minerals within the stone. Both can be valuable, depending on aesthetic preferences. Value in turquoise is highly subjective, based on color, texture, and pattern. Turquoise has a long and rich history, with many meanings attributed to it. Ultimately, its appeal is deeply personal. Its colors, from bright blue to green, resemble water held in stone, with matrix patterns that evoke movement. This unique combination of color, texture, and history is what makes turquoise so enduringly fascinating”, Thea says. Read more about the history of the turquoise jewelry now on Gem Stories on gem.app! #vintageturquoise #turquoisejewellery #antiqueturquoisejewelry #jewelrystores #vintagejewels

“I’d describe my style as a bold late 60s to mid 70s whirlwind”, says Emma @djemmapeel 💚 ”My absolute favourite period is 1967 to 1977 – the prints, the cuts, the carefree femininity. I’ve never really deviated from it since I was a teenager. Thinking about it, it’s pretty extraordinary that a decade in fashion can still delight me and surprise me all these years later. I’m always discovering new labels, amazing dresses, suits, patterns, fabrics… the thrill of it never ever wanes. Wearing it feels like a dopamine hit.” Can you relate?
