I got the Icarus piece on my right thigh as my very first tattoo back in 2016. At the time, I lived in San Diego, where I fell in love with the patterned shading style Gemma Pariente was doing. I was lucky enough to be able to book a couple sessions with her in San Diego (an extremely skilled local artist doing the style you want—it doesn’t get much better than that!), and thus my Icarus tattoo was born. The piece was inspired by Greek pottery. I fell in love with it instantly, and for many years it was my only tattoo.

I always knew that I wanted a companion piece to Icarus based on the Bartimaeus Trilogy, but it took getting a whole sleeve around the VERY SAME TRILOGY to realize that I had to pivot away from my Egyptian hieroglyphics concept and toward something else I loved from the books: a quote from Ptolemy’s Gate, the third and my favorite of the trilogy. And so the theme of my matching thigh piece became “I could leap to the stars.”

By this time I had done a couple (okay, six) sessions with Emily Geiger (another extremely skilled local artist doing exactly the style I wanted) on my Bartimaeus sleeve, so she was the clear choice to do this one as well. I sent in a reference sketch, but the sketches I got back way exceeded my expectations. Emily matched the Icarus piece’s composition so well that many people who have seen my thigh pieces don’t even realize they were done by different artists! The patterns in it are so clean and intricate and beautiful.

It’s been eight years since I got my first tattoo and just under one year since it finally got its partner. Here’s to having gorgeous art in my skin that I get to keep forever!
