Beyond its rich agricultural and industrial history, did you know that some considered Fyansford an ideal place for birdwatching?
The rivers now known as Barwon and Moorabool were said to be teeming with ducks, while kingfishers, crested shrikes and galahs kept watch from the trees.
Interested in getting out and exploring Fyansford’s natural history?
Explore Buckley Falls via the Barwon River Trail (details on the @cityofgreatergeelong
website). While you’re there, be sure to check out the Tours of the Fyansford Paper Mills, by the Highton Rotary Club.
Don’t forget to bring your binoculars with you!

It’s Waring season – the wettest and coldest season in the Kulin Nation calendar!
During this season, migratory birds fly from Tasmania to Victoria for the winter and territorial birds will build and reinforce their nests.
One such territorial bird is the wedge-tailed eagle (affectionately known as a ‘wedgie’).
Written accounts of local wedgie sightings have appeared in the Geelong Advertiser for over 100 years. An early recorded sighting was published in 1868. You can read more about this in our latest Picture the Past column, published on Monday 4 May.
Have you spotted a wedge-tailed eagle north of Geelong lately?
Want to take your bird watching to the next level? Borrow a bird watching kit from our catalogue – it’s part of our Library of Things!
