A "trusted" school district email almost hijacked one of our schools today.
SPF, DKIM, DMARC — all passed. MFA was satisfied. The attacker logged in from out of state twelve minutes after the click.
This is the new normal: phishing that arrives from real people you know, whose accounts were compromised earlier in the week. Every authentication check passes. Every spam filter waves it through. By the time the user clicks, the kit has stolen the password AND the post-MFA session cookie. MFA does not stop this.
What the kit looks like (the pattern — exact subjects and file names rotate every few hours):
- A real, recognizable sender — a partner school, a vendor, a colleague
- Routine paperwork attached as a PDF: purchase order, scanned form, signed document
- A single big "view document" button inside the PDF
- Click bounces through a real, reputable cloud service that filters trust (Microsoft Azure, Mixpanel, etc.)
- Final landing: a pixel-perfect fake Microsoft sign-in page on an attacker domain
- The only tell is the URL bar. Real Microsoft = login.microsoftonline.com. Anything else, walk away.
We caught it in 7 minutes because Defender's "Unfamiliar location" alert fired the moment the attacker signed in from another state. Disabled the account, killed every active session, locked the on-prem AD, blocked the URL pattern tenant-wide, and quarantined the same email out of a second user's inbox before they ever saw it.
