Derrick Gee doesn’t call himself a critic, he calls himself a “professional music fan.” In just two years, the Sydney-based creator has gone from sharing playlists to interviewing Lorde, Jamie xx, and St. Vincent in his home studio. This June, he took his love of deep cuts on a four-city European tour: part music talk show, part listening session. At the link in bio, @hyunji_nam talks to @gee_derrick about niche genres, resisting algorithms, and why good taste should still feel personal.

Behind the Fred again.. Documentary with Derrick Gee
On May 8, a documentary capturing the preparation process behind Fred again..’s Vancouver show was released. I spoke with director and creator Derrick Gee about how the project came together, why he chose the documentary format, and the kinds of stories he hopes to tell in the future.

The second last slide says it all. Last minute, but willing, this doc was made over cold DMs, WhatsApp calls and blind faith. Every crew member adds their finesse, creativity, energy. Directed by me, shot by an American, an Australian, with a crew of Canadians, edited in the UK and USA, then graded in Melbourne, it’s a story of community and internet bandwidth. Thank you to all involved, it has been a pleasure.

One day, I got an email from Fred’s team asking...would I like to come to Vancouver and shoot something with Fred? We shot an episode of Solid Air (you might’ve seen it!). But I also pitched a documentary. Why? Because - being someone who has built a career of short, vertical video, I felt bored. Bored of not being able to explore the stories and experiences I was witnessing first hand. Bored of trying to find a “hook” that will “grab” an audience in half a second. Bored of not being able to celebrate the great people who work tirelessly to make your music listening experience a delight.
So here we are. Almost forty minutes of observation, of conversation, of wandering around and looking under the giant meteorite that is Fred again..’s 10 shows in 10 weeks odyssey. It takes time, but it values your time I hope. And I hope you get as much out of it as I did. Much love, Derrick
All the love and thanks to Fred’s team and Warner Music.
