The inside of the Supreme Court of the United States is a place most people never get to see. On a recent trip to Washington, D.C., a group of #GCDSStudents in a Constitutional Law class had a rare look inside the place (and the people) who preside over the most consequential rulings in the country. #GCDSBigThinkers #GCDSAppliedLearning

☀️Grandparents and Grandfriends Day at GCDS was a day to remember! We welcomed a record number of vistors to campus, opened our classrooms, and took our senior friends on a tour of Old Church Road. From storytime to perusing the countless works of art on display in each division, this #GCDSTradition is an annual reminder that our community spreads far and wide. To every grandparent who joined us — thank you for making this day so special. #GCDSInclusive #GCDSCommunity

The National Center for Women in Technology (NCWIT) recognized two #GCDSStudents from across the state at the Connecticut Aspirations in Computing Award Celebration, hosted at Eversource. Out of 3,300 applicants, Mary Chickering ‘27 was one of 40 to be named a National Winner. In her junior thesis, Mary built a convolutional neural network to classify images of patients with Parkinson’s disease. From the same applicant pool, Kaki Weiksner ‘27 was one of 360 to receive an Honorable Mention at the ceremony. For her junior thesis, Kaki used Python to examine patterns of a century-old unsolved math problem.   Congratulations, Mary and Kaki! #GCDSComputerScience.

What is conflict? What is worth fighting for? These were the questions at the heart of the #GCDSGrade5 Civil War Museum - the culminating event of an interdisciplinary project-based learning unit that connected students’ work across reading, social studies, writing, music, technology, and art. Throughout the module, students read Civil War novels in class while studying the four-year conflict; they conducted research; synthesized their findings into papers; composed music of the mid-nineteenth century; and worked in the MakerSpace to design portraits commonly found in that era. The final museum experience brought each piece together and concluded with students acting as docents, confidently sharing their expertise with families and visitors. Parents explored student projects, read research papers, viewed artwork, and interviewed students using scavenger hunt questions that encouraged conversation, critical thinking, and deeper engagement. “What made the experience so special was seeing students synthesize their learning across disciplines and communicate it with such ownership, creativity, and pride.” - Nina Basinet, Head of Upper Elementary School #GCDSVisibleLearning #GCDSAcademics #GCDSParentsAsPartners

The #GCDSUS halls were packed wall-to-wall with a year’s worth of research as #GCDSGrade11 students showcased the findings of their Junior Thesis Projects. From strategies to improve transportation routes to the impacts of AI-generated images, the Class of 2027 gave family, friends, and faculty a close look at the work they’ve been exploring since September in one of the most celebrated nights of the year. And in the band rooms, seniors pursuing a #GCDSPerformingArts diploma showed their mastery of song and sound in some unforgettable solo performances. Congratulations to each student presenter and performer! #GCDSJuniorThesis #GCDSAcademics
