Last week, the President of the UN General Assembly convened the first-ever high-level plenary meeting on addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise, held during the High-Level Week of the 79th session of the General Assembly. Our Rising Nations Initiative Youth Delegate from Tuvalu, Ms. Grace Malie, was invited as a panelist for the multi-stakeholder panel exploring the connections between livelihoods, socioeconomic challenges, and culture and heritage in the context of sea-level rise. Grace issued a powerful call to action, urging that sea-level rise be recognized as a global priority. She emphasized the urgent need to address the existing gaps in political commitment to tackling this issue. The global community must engage in meaningful dialogue that recognizes the realities and rights of affected countries and communities. 🇨🇴 “I want a bright future for my children.” Voices from the Frontlines: Barranquilla, Colombia – Dalien’s Story captures a mother’s determination to protect her family in the face of mounting climate risks. In her community, repeated heavy rains and flooding have become routine. Her home has been inundated, her family’s health has suffered, and each new storm brings renewed fear of what might come next. The mental and physical toll of these conditions is real, but so is Dalien’s hope for a safer, more stable future for her children. The Great Caribbean Shifts Report highlights the growing impacts of climate change on household well-being, especially for women and families, and underscores the urgency of locally grounded adaptation strategies that reduce risk, support mental health, and enable people to build resilience where they live. Women in many African communities face constraints imposed by traditional gender roles and attitudes, often having limited influence over decisions related to climate change responses and mobility. For women, migration is frequently a last resort. Despite being less optimistic about their future prospects in their current locations, women are often less likely to move than men in response to gradual climate changes. Supporting women with climate information, adaptive skills, and access to social and legal protection can strengthen their agency, enabling them to make informed decisions both in adapting to climate change at home and in choosing to migrate when necessary. In Senegal’s pastoral zones, climate impacts are reshaping the viability of livelihoods tied to livestock. In this video, Samba Ly, a Fulani pastoralist, describes how the bush has become less dense and how herders now have to go “further and further” to find green spaces. Water scarcity is central to the challenge, with a clear call for practical solutions, including deep water wells. This requires risk-informed development backed by financing and policy action to support locally-led adaptation where it is most needed—protecting pastoral livelihoods, reducing future loss and damage, and enabling dignified pathways for communities that rely on mobility to survive. The African Shifts Report, together with the African Shifts Digital Platform, brings evidence and frontline perspectives together to inform people- and community-centered adaptation pathways. With the right preparation and investment in its people and institutions, Africa can harness climate mobility to help communities and nations adapt to climate change, shaping their future and building resilience at the local level. The Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI) will foster coalitions of champions to drive progress on the ACMI Agenda for Action. This will promote people-positive climate action, empower communities, and enable them to cope with the inevitable need for climate mobility. Africa’s optimism is a powerful source of resilience as the continent seeks development opportunities and solutions amidst the climate crisis. While many Africans are already enduring the impacts of climate shocks, a significant number are committed to adapting and transitioning to a more sustainable development model. Projections of future climate mobility in Africa suggest that thoughtful development choices and mobility pathways can substantially reduce the number of people displaced by climate stressors, while strengthening resilience across the continent. As sea levels rise, many communities are confronted with an impossible choice: whether to leave the place they call home or remain as risks intensify. Climate impacts must not erode sovereignty, identity, or rights. Effective responses require safeguarding statehood, protecting cultural continuity, and ensuring that mobility is voluntary, safe, and dignified—while staying remains a protected right. Climate mobility is not only about movement. It is about agency, justice, and preserving the foundations of community life in the face of accelerating climate risk. #ClimateMobility #SeaLevelRise

How can evidence help translate climate mobility from an emerging policy concern into an actionable adaptation agenda? On 20 May 2026, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) will host a virtual session on Leveraging Evidence for Climate Mobility and Adaptation. The session will explore how data, modelling, and scenario-based analysis can support climate mobility planning and adaptation decision-making. It will also showcase the GCCM–LISER collaboration with the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), and the CliC:ME dashboard. The discussion will bring together experts and practitioners to examine: - How forward-looking evidence can inform adaptation and preparedness - How data tools can support climate mobility policy dialogue - How the CliC:ME dashboard can help users explore climate mobility and socio-economic impacts - How evidence can support communities to remain safely where they are or to move with dignity when needed Register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/DEi0tuCaTDSajJl5X8o2RQ #ClimateMobility | #Adaptation | #ClimateData | #EvidenceForAction

Borderlands sit at the intersection of trade, migration, and climate change. As climate mobility increases, these regions require focused attention and investment. People-centered climate action empowers communities to build resilient pathways and foster inclusive growth for Africa’s future. Existing transboundary connections in border areas should be leveraged to strengthen cross-border cooperation on climate-resilient development and to facilitate joint planning for the safe and dignified movement of people. Agriculture is central to life across Africa. However, climate impacts on rain-fed farming and crop yields are reshaping the continent’s population dynamics. Effective governance of land and water resources will be essential to help smallholder farmers withstand climate stressors and remain in their homes. Additionally, enabling cities to manage population growth through climate mobility will be key to Africa’s resilience.
