Early this morning the first (micro)moon of the month was setting.
This month has a rather rare lunar feature: there will be two full moons in the same month.
* 🌕 First full moon: May 1, 2026
* 🌕 Second full moon: May 31, 2026
The second one is called a “Blue Moon”, although the Moon does not actually turn blue. The term simply refers to the second full moon occurring within the same calendar month.
The full moons of May are also micromoons
A micromoon occurs when a full moon happens while the Moon is near its apogee, the point in its elliptical orbit where it is farthest from Earth.
As a result:
* the Moon appears slightly smaller
* and a bit dimmer than an average full moon
