My brother George had long hair for most of his adult life. Four years ago he passed, and the year before that, my wife passed. As you can imagine, I did not have much motivation to do anything, let alone get my haircut. Then, after some time and some healing, when I noticed how long my hair had become, I realized I liked it. Perhaps it was the freedom of not getting it cut. Perhaps it was a bit of radical self expression. It was also a way of carrying my brother with me.
Last weekend, on the fourth anniversary of his passing, I decided it would be a fitting tribute to get it trimmed. So just before a friend’s birthday party in Miami, I went all in, and got a wash, cut, and blowout. By the way, why hadn’t any of my women friends told me how amazing a blowout is? Thanks, Andrea at Beach Hair Salon for such a remarkable and memorable experience.
Four years ago today, I lost my brother, and my best friend. We spent fifty years together on this blue-green marble, and spoke to each other nearly every day.
George was a remarkable brother, husband, son, father, uncle and friend. He was passionate, creative, intelligent, whimsical, unique, and so loving. He was deeply supportive of the people he knew, and relished creating opportunities for others to follow their passions and dreams. He epitomized the word mudita; he truly found joy in other people’s happiness.
Simply put, George loved to create magic.
From an early age, my brother looked at the world differently. When he came home as an infant, I asked my mom, “please please let me hold him”, and then proceeded to drop him on his head on the kitchen floor. Maybe that explains some things!
George is no longer with us physically, but wherever he is, he’s probably smiling at us, playing some music, watching the sunrise, and urging us to follow our dreams. He’d say we’re only on this blue-green marble for a short time, and that we should live life fully. After all, George packed in 10 lifetimes into his 50 short years. Let us carry his spirit forward. Quoting TS Eliot: “This is not farewell, but fare forward, voyager.”
