A Week-Long Celebration Honoring Coltrane and Jimmy Garrison
ShapeShifter Lab will host a major cultural event in September 2026 as ShapeShifter Plus presents a centennial celebration marking 100 years of John Coltrane.
This multidisciplinary festival — centered on the legacy of Jimmy Garrison — will feature legendary performers, emerging artists, youth ensembles, and immersive programming across music, movement, visual art, and spoken word.
Presented in collaboration with The John & Alice Coltrane Home, Jowcol Music LLC and Belongō , the celebration aims to amplify diverse voices, support artists, invest in education, and preserve Coltrane’s and Garrison’s legacies.

Hosting a workshop/clinic at Bass Domus Roma this Sunday, April 19, 2026 from 3-5pm (Rome time). The organizers have been wonderful. Everyone is excited about the project and we’re looking forward to creating more events of this nature in Rome.

Kenwood Dennard, Miles Evans, Alex Foster, Mino Cinelu, Shunzo Ono, David Fiuczinksi and other incredible artists participating in this fantastic event. These are the cats I got my NY music life started with at Sweet Basil’s every week with the Gil Evans Orchestra. These gents were also part of Jaco’s Big Band and fundamental to the Saturday Night Live Band in so many ways. Historical figures is an understatement.
If you’re curious about how we sound playing some of Jaco’s classics (Donna Lee, Teen Town, The Chicken/Soul Intro) tonight is the night to come hang!

These guys, even though summoned to carry out a sad task, were the heroes of the day.
They came to remove the poor tree (well 2 of them in the end) with surgical precision in a delicate and dangerous dance with their chain saws. Kept everyone, including themselves, safe.
Very kind and humble fellows too. When I asked them if I could take a picture with them and I called them heroes they said in a surprised and gentle manner that no one really calls them those words or wants pictures with them… They ARE! Worked their butts off and got the work done efficiently and safely. Thank you, gentlemen!
Also, seems like our tree/s caused quite the news reporting storm between yesterday and today!
Sad to see those giants of nature go. I spent many years connecting with them.
