Gallery Thirty Three warmly invites you to join us on Friday the 1st of May for the opening of The Small Works Project. This May we are very proud to be presenting a new initiative for Gallery Thirty Three, with our Small Works Project, opening on Friday the 1st of May. Nearly all our renowned artists, and some guest artists, will be producing a selection of A4 works on paper, covering our walls in unframed and framed works, creating a unique opportunity to secure an original artwork. A percentage of the proceeds from these works will go towards a workshop at Mt Aspiring College, inspiring the next generation of artists!

'Brian' by Andrew Tischler is available to purchase online and in the gallery as part of our Small Works Project. A percentage of sales will go towards a workshop at Mt Aspiring College, Wānaka. "With our online art school - Tisch Academy, this drawing was part of our "100 Heads Challenge". To develop skills with portrait drawing, it takes hours of repetition and dedicated practice. Many of our members have engaged in this exercise and seen massive growth with their drawings". "Brian had a face that just needed to be drawn - expressive eyes and a lifetime of experience written on his face. Every wrinkle, earned. I naturally find myself gravitating to older subjects. I’ll continue to draw this guy, I have a lot more to work on, from the files!"

'Tuhoe' by Andrew Tischler is available to purchase online and in the gallery as part of our Small Works Project. A percentage of sales will go towards a workshop at Mt Aspiring College, Wānaka. Bruno Isaacs, known as Tuhoe, is a nationally recognised character. Formerly a Mongrel Mob Gang leader, he gave his life to Christ and ultimately became a force for good, leaving his old path behind. "Tuhoe dropped by my studio one day and I created this little ballpoint study. His animated character and presence left an indelible mark and he's been the subject of many of my portraits".

Stunning new works from Auckland based artist, Deborah Moss. These works are currently on display in the gallery as part of The Small Works Project. A percentage of sales will go towards a workshop at Mt Aspiring College, Wānaka. Drawing upon the dynamism of her rural surroundings, she translates her environment to her artworks creating poetic expressions, energetic gestures and stories that reveal a powerful alchemy of forces between the natural world and her interior vision. Her approach to painting is process driven – a sensory experience which encourages the work to develop on its own accord through rich layers of paint and response to surface discoveries. - Ground Signals 01, Mixed media on paper - Ground Signals 02, Mixed media on paper - Ground Signals 03, Mixed media on paper - Ground Signals 04, Mixed media on paper - Ground Signals 05 Mixed media on paper

Stunning new arrivals from Auckland based jeweller Penelope Barnhill. Barnhill explains that the inspiration for her work is everywhere, particularly in nature and people. She particularly enjoys creating unique pieces for individuals to wear which represent sentiment, love and protection. Though she claims to have no particular favourite stones, she adores colour and pure materials and endeavours to achieve synergy between the stones she employs to realise her designs and of course their intended wearer. - Fresh Water Keshi Pearl Necklace, made with keshi pearls and sterling silver - Unheated Australian Parti Sapphire Heart Ring, made with 1.62ct gold, sterling silver and sapphires

Presenting local artist Isabella Robbins’ fabulous 𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘮𝘦 Series in the gallery this month. The 𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘮𝘦 series is a playful colour exhibition where each work acts as characters who come together to perform a show. It uses traditional glazes and contemporary methods to connect painting and ceramics, using glazes as a form of paint and clay as a canvas.

As part of The Small Works Project we are thrilled to present these beautiful handmade non-fired clay oxen by Sean Beldon. "To me the clay ox is a positive symbol and today I use it as my logo to remind me of simple pleasure and fulfilment of creating something. In a way, there is a small homage to the past and my homeland and a look at my migratory presence in every ox."
