I’ve been captivated with the tondo lately. When I was in Florence I was inspired by those done by Botticelli and Michelangelo. The shape of our irises, the earth, and the form of flowers are echoed so it’s no wonder artists are drawn to explore the possibilities of composition in a tondo. We’re used to looking at the world via the rectangle or square but the tondo is a good place to contemplate we see.
The work you see will be available at my upcoming exhibition in Victoria @gallerymerrick

Mark your calendars, our summer exhibition schedule is officially here!
This summer, the gallery is pleased to present a curated selection of works by some of Canada’s most compelling contemporary artists.
In July, Robert Lemay and John Capitano bring together a vibrant dialogue of richly layered floral compositions.
August shifts into atmospheric terrain with acrylic landscapes by Darrell Underschultz and lens-based, multi-media pieces by Chloé Giroux-Bertrand, whose distinct perspectives capture the quiet poetry of Canada’s scenery.
Concluding the summer exhibition series, Armin Abedi presents the much anticipated first solo exhibition at Gallery Merrick of an intricate and expressive body of figurative-based work.
These are going to some spectacular shows that we cannot wait to share with you so get excited!
Here’s a closer look at Chrissy Nickerson and Michael Cameron’s most recent exhibition.
This exhibition brings together the work of Chrissy Nickerson and Michael Cameron, two artists whose practices emerge from distinctly different approaches to image-making, yet converge through a shared sensitivity to place, perception, and the act of painting itself.
Nickerson’s work is rooted in direct experience of the landscape. Painting from lived encounters across Canada, her practice transforms observation into something more immediate and embodied. Using vivid colour, gestural mark-making, and layered impasto, her paintings resist static representation in favour of movement and atmosphere. Her approach balances a deep respect for traditional landscape painting with a willingness to push toward abstraction, allowing each work to exist somewhere between depiction and interpretation.
Cameron’s work, by contrast, unfolds as a more introspective and associative process. At first glance, his paintings present richly layered surfaces where fields of paint are built up, dissolved with turpentine, and reworked through spray and gesture. Within these surfaces, multiple depths emerge: figures, architectural fragments, shadows, and veils of marks that obscure as much as they reveal. The imagery often feels partially hidden, as though glimpsed through a shifting screen.
Together, Nickerson and Cameron create a dialogue between outward experience and inward reflection. Nickerson’s paintings immerse the viewer in the physical and sensory world, while Cameron’s works draw attention to the internal processes through which that world is interpreted, remembered, and reassembled.
This exhibition invites viewers to move between these two approaches and to consider how meaning shifts between what is seen, what is felt, and what is carried beneath the surface.
