We look forward to your visit. ——- 参加アーティストたちの実践は、それぞれの文化的背景や素材へのアプローチによって大きく異なっています。身体的なジェスチャーや即興的な筆致によって画面を構築するアーティストがいる一方で、削り取りや重層化、燃焼といった物質的介入を通して表層を形成するアーティストもいます。また、都市の記憶やストリートカルチャー、自然や神話的イメージなど、多様な文化的文脈から抽象表現へと接近する実践も見られます。こうした差異は、現代の抽象絵画が単一の様式として存在するのではなく、異なる文化、経験、身体性の交差のなかで更新され続けていることを示しています。 The practices of these artists differ significantly according to their cultural backgrounds and approaches to material. Some construct their compositions through physical gesture and improvisational brushwork, while others shape the surface through material interventions such as scraping, layering, or burning. Still others approach abstraction through diverse cultural references, including urban memory, street culture, nature, and mythological imagery. Gallery Commonでは5月24日（日）まで、国際的なアーティストによるグループ展「REFLECTIONS : PERFORMANCE」を開催いたします。 “REFLECTIONS: PERFORMANCE,” an international group exhibition, is now on view through May 24. 1954年に結成された具体美術協会は、戦後日本における最初期の前衛的なアーティスト集団のひとつであり、物質と精神のあいだに生まれる新たな関係を探求しました。「具体」とは、精神の自由が現実の中に具体的なかたちとして現れることを意味します。 白髪一雄はその思想を身体的に体現し、足で絵具を塗り広げる行為によって、絵画を身体と物質が出会う瞬間の記録へと変換しました。 本展のアーティストたちもまた、絵画を固定されたイメージではなく、行為とプロセスの場として捉えています。制作の痕跡は時間の層として立ち現れ、作品は多様な文化的背景や素材へのアプローチのもとで展開されています。 Founded in 1954, the Gutai Art Association was one of the earliest avant-garde artist collectives in postwar Japan, exploring new relationships between matter and spirit. “Gutai,” meaning “concreteness,” refers to the idea that the freedom of the human spirit takes concrete form within reality. Kazuo Shiraga embodied this philosophy physically, transforming painting into a record of the moment in which body and material meet through the act of painting with his feet. The artists in this exhibition similarly approach painting not as a fixed image, but as a field of action and process. Utilizing a wide palette of bold hues, the artist  creates lively, buzzing colorscapes. Her works tackle histories and practices of expressionistic  gesture while ultimately shirking a didactic stance on painting’s value, instead insisting on the  open-endedness of the work’s potential interpretations. Weyer enacts an intense and  hyperfocused engagement with her materials. In the studio, the artist develops his practice further: he weaves connections between the legacy of graffiti and abstract expressionist painting, while diverting working-class techniques and aesthetics (remixing Spanish white, creating raw cinder block sculptures with gradient-colored mortar, repurposing fluorescent markings used by architects, and abandoned objects found in the street) to extract a new language—often unfinished—at the crossroads of the margins of painting and urban renovation, set against a backdrop of institutionalization and gentrification. Entirely self-taught, his approach to production is grounded in movement, instinct, and an intuitive response to the properties of his materials and tools. Created within a grammar of automatism and immediacy, his works resemble improvised compositions, each contributing to an ongoing narrative of his stylistic evolution. Tashiro’s early collages layered fragments of text and imagery from newspapers, books, and magazines, forming textured compositions that evoke imaginary and surreal narratives. Over time, his focus shifted toward the materiality of the surface itself, particularly the interaction between two- and three-dimensional planes. Through explorations in carving and mark-making, he began cutting and gouging into wooden surfaces, layering them with paper, pigments, inks, and found materials to create abstract compositions of colour and form that merge sculpture with collage. Born  in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents and raised in Puerto Rico, Parlá grew up between the political and cultural  currents of the Caribbean and the southern United States. He has described his upbringing as taking place in a  "Cuban autonomous zone." Returning to Miami in the early 1980s, he absorbed the city’s burgeoning hip hop  culture, which later energized his visual language. He studied painting at Savannah College of Art and Design and  continued at New World School of the Arts and Miami Dade College.  Parlá’s practice is a layered, time based methodology that fuses writing and abstract expressionism. He builds  palimpsest like paintings and installations through cycles of addition, subtraction and erasure. Calligraphic marks  surface and recede while pasted fragments of posters and billboards embed into textured, wall like canvases. These  works form a new kind of landscape, psycho-geographic terrains where language becomes topography and layers  read as social and geological history. The son of a woodworker, Pariani’s earliest  memories are of his time in his father’s studio. These moments spent sanding and gluing wood  manifested into a love of working with his hands, informing the physical process of painting for  which he is now known. Pariani studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan from 2005  to 2010, where he primarily worked in figuration. However, Pariani is now highly regarded for his  vividly hued abstracted canvases that push the boundaries of the genre by exploring new techniques  and embedding contemporary culture into his abstractions.  Pariani’s process is labor-intensive, involving many layers of gesso that are tinted in different colors  and sanded down to create a uniquely textured surface, a preparation that takes many days to  complete. Through this method, he foregrounds the significance of color and process in his work.  The monochrome or two-tone grounds create an enveloping field that is an important element in his  paintings, as they remain a space of continued formal experimentation. He currently splits his time between New York and Puerto Rico. Otero was the subject of major solo exhibitions in 2017 at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, NY, and in 2016 at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. In 2009, Otero was included in the exhibition ‘Constellations’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, shortly after receiving his MFA. Otero’s work is in numerous public and private collections including The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx NY; DePaul Art Museum, Chicago IL; Istanbul Modern, Istanbul, Turkey; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City MO; Long Museum, Shanghai, China; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago IL; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh NC; Solomon R. Gallery Commonでは5月24日（日）まで、国際的なアーティストによるグループ展「REFLECTIONS : PERFORMANCE」を開催いたします。 “REFLECTIONS: PERFORMANCE,” an international group exhibition, is now on view through May 24. ——- スペンサー・ルイスは1979年コネチカット州ハートフォード生まれ。ロードアイランド・スクール・オブ・デザインとカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校（UCLA）で学び、現在はロサンゼルスを拠点に活動する。 段ボールや黄麻布に描くジェスチャーを交えた絵画で知られるルイスは、派手でカラフルな色彩を用いつつも、その根底にある衝動な制作プロセスが暗示されるような筋状の線、塗りたくられたような絵の具、そして粗いストロークを通じて表現する。まるで無限であるかのような混沌とした多層性を持つルイスのキャンバス作品は、筆致や動作の痕跡が相互に重なり合うことで覆われたりまた剥がされたりを繰り返し、物語と瞬間は絵画の最も密集した部分に向かって蓄積していく。一見予測不可能に見える構図は絵画的な構成とイメージの構築に関心を持っているルイス自身の方法論と構造に基づいている。一貫してキャンバスの中心に向かって集中するルイスの筆致は同じ物語の異なる層を語っているのであり、説明的な痕跡と雄弁な筆致が黄麻布の上に積み重なって読み取ることのできる境界線上に歴史を作り上げているのである。 Spencer Lewis, born 1979 in Hartford, Connecticut, lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of California, Los Angeles. Known for his gestural paintings on cardboard and jute, Spencer Lewis uses flashy bright and colorful notions executed through streaked lines, smears of paint and rough strokes that suggest the impulsive creative process underneath. With chaotic, almost infinite layers, Lewis’s canvases conceal and simultaneously unveil a brushstroke, a gesture over the other, stories and moments culminating and accumulating on the painting’s densest parts. Despite the apparent unpredictability of Lewis’s compositions, they are based on a methodology and structure. Lewis is, in fact, interested in pictorial organization and image-making. Consistently concentrating towards the centre of the canvas, Lewis’s brushstrokes frantically tell the different layers of the same narrative. Descriptive marks and eloquent signs build up on the jute to create a history on the verge of legibility. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.   Aaron Garber-Maikovska's work pushes the boundaries of traditional painting as his somatic experience heavily informs his creative process. His artistic practice is a reflection of the interdependence between his physical body and the work he produces. The Los Angeles-based artist employs various techniques to produce richly textured and vibrantly coloured abstract compositions. In his paintings, he creates fields of colour that blend and interact with each other, juxtaposed with a single continuous line. He describes this line as a character that he improvises with, bringing the bi-dimensional surface to life in a way that echoes his somatic approach to creating art. Garber-Maikovska's approach to painting is deeply intuitive, with the artist surrendering himself to the flow of his intuition and allowing his impulses to guide his hand. His fluted poly works become a physical manifestation of his innermost thoughts and feelings, with each brush stroke representing a gesture imbued with a personal yet universal meaning.
