Gallery Chang presents Swell of Light, a group exhibition bringing together works by Jimi Gleason, Shane Guffogg, and Andy Moses. The exhibition explores light not as a fixed form, but as a shifting condition—emerging, dissolving, and reforming across time and space.
Bringing together three California-based artists, Swell of Light traces a shared sensibility shaped by the environment and artistic lineage of the Light and Space Movement. While each artist has developed a distinct visual language, their works converge in an ongoing inquiry into perception, atmosphere, and the experience of light.
Across the exhibition, the works draw from subtle transformations found in the ocean, the sky, and the passage of time. Rather than representing landscape, they investigate how perception itself takes form—how light shifts, lingers, and disappears.
Gleason engages reflection and surface as active spatial elements, incorporating the viewer’s movement into the work. Guffogg centers on duration, building layered surfaces where color becomes a record of time and memory. Moses approaches light through motion and material, using fluid processes that translate natural forces into immersive visual fields.
Together, these works reflect a shared attention to the moment before form fully settles—a space where perception sharpens and meaning begins to emerge.
Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, May 7, from 6–8 PM.

Choi Woolga (b. 1956)
Raw Signal

Before language, humanity first left traces on walls.
Not as explanation, but as a gesture of existence.
Inspired by the primal energy of cave paintings, Choi Woolga explores the rhythms of the unconscious through repetitive faces, symbols, and raw forms.
Raw Signals reflects on the oldest visual language still remaining within us.

Who do you see?
In Jimi Gleason’s recent work on display in Swell of Light, silver nitrate creates a luminous surface that shifts with light and reflection. Reminiscent of jewelry and polished metal, the work transforms perception into something intimate, atmospheric, and constantly changing.

Andy Moses is a celebrated contemporary artist known for his luminous, abstract works that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Moses grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture and light-filled landscapes of Southern California, which continue to influence his work. He studied at the renowned California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he was mentored by influential artists like John Baldessari and Michael Asher. These formative years sparked his fascination with the intersection of physicality, perception, and the metaphysical dimensions of art.
Moses’ work is defined by its exploration of light, color, and form, often utilizing unconventional techniques and materials. His intricate process involves manipulating paints mixed with metallic pigments and industrial coatings, applied to curved or shaped panels. The resulting surfaces are dynamic, shifting with the viewer’s perspective and the surrounding light. These works invite an immersive experience, creating a dialogue between the observer, the artwork, and the environment.
After moving to New York in 1982, Moses became part of the city’s burgeoning art scene, developing ties with artists like Jeff Koons and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During this time, his work reflected a fascination with geological forces and the macro/micro dynamics of nature. In 2000, Moses returned to Los Angeles, where the unique coastal light and vast landscapes inspired a shift in his practice. Incorporating elements of the Light and Space movement, he began experimenting with reflective surfaces and concave panels that expand the viewer’s perception of space and time.😁

Last night, we celebrated the opening of Swell of Light at Gallery Chang New York.
It was a meaningful evening bringing together the works of Jimi Gleason, Shane Guffogg, Andy Moses — three artists connected through light, movement, material, and the shifting atmosphere of the West coast.
We were especially grateful to welcome Jimi and Shane, who traveled from California to join us for the evening and share the exhibition in person. Although Andy could not attend, his presence was unmistakably felt through the works themselves, which carried their own energy across the space.
Thank you to everyone who spent the evening with us. The conversations, reflections, and shared moments made the night truly memorable.
Swell of Light is now on view at Gallery Chang New York.

Chou Woolga [Raw Signal -

Thank you to everyone who joined us on this rainy evening for Choi Woolga’s Solo Exhibition.
Before language, there is emotion and perhaps art is where it first begins.

Spotlight 🔎 Shane Guffogg
Shane Guffogg is an internationally celebrated contemporary painter whose abstract works bridge the emotive depth of classical traditions with the innovative spirit of modern abstraction. Born in California’s San Joaquin Valley in 1962, Guffogg grew up surrounded by vast landscapes and open skies that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) under the mentorship of influential artists like John Baldessari, where he developed his distinctive approach to exploring light, space, and the human experience through painting.
In 2024, Guffogg presented a landmark solo exhibition titled At the Still Point of the Turning World – Strangers of Time at the Scala Contarini del Bovolo in Venice, Italy. This exhibition, aligned with the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, showcased 21 new paintings inspired by T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets. Through this series, Guffogg explored the interplay of time, memory, and migration, weaving themes of transience and permanence into his work. Notably, the exhibition incorporated augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI), offering viewers a multisensory experience that deepened their connection to the paintings.
Shane will be presenting his works in our upcoming group exhibition, Swell of Light, opening on May 7. We would love to welcome you to the opening reception on May 7 at 6 PM. The artist will be present.

Who is this man, and where is he going?
In @suhyongsun_archive ‘s Brooklyn 2 (2023), a solitary figure sits in a state of pause within a sharply defined yet unstable urban interior. The surrounding elements—signage, color blocks, and compressed space—suggest a public environment, yet offer no clear narrative.
Rendered with heightened color and deliberate distortion, the figure appears both present and withdrawn. He is not moving through the city, but held within it—caught in a moment that feels suspended between transit and stillness.
Rather than describing a specific place, the painting constructs a psychological space, where time, perception, and presence quietly accumulate.

On View, Gallery Chang – Seoul
The innovative exploration of space, light, and color.
Central to @kimseajoong ‘s philosophy is his belief that “color is another interpretation of space.”
His works often focus on the interplay between darkness and light, using monochromatic surfaces to evoke a profound sense of spatial depth. His signature material international Klein Blue (IKB), transcends its secondary association, offering a direct engagement with a visual essence of color itself.
Visit Gallery Chang - Seoul today and enjoy his immersive exploration.
