Artist Talk by Gina Korompot @gimoriin
Our Art and Design students receive a unique insight into contemporary art through PICA.
This partnership provides opportunities for artists participating in PICA’s International Artist Exchange Program to engage with NMTAFE staff and students through talks, events and exposure to PICA’s flagship exhibition Hatched: National Graduate Show.
During her residency with PICA, Gina Korompot will develop a project that explores the subjects of migration, impermanence and home through the lens of Makassan-Australian history. Drawing on her childhood experience of living in Australia for three years, Korompot will examine how displacement and belonging are shaped by personal, historical and political contexts. Working across installation and animation to create contemplative and immersive experiences, Korompot’s research will consider intimate portraits of trade histories and cross-cultural exchange.
Gina Korompot’s residency, together with that of fellow artist Naoko Uemoto, marks the third year of BREEZE, a collaborative initiative between PICA, Rumata’ Artspace, and Universitas Negeri Makassar. This partnership fosters knowledge-sharing and cultural exploration, strengthening the ties between Western Australia and Makassar. By revisiting the historical connections between Australian First Nations peoples and Makassans—dating back to well before colonisation—BREEZE provides a vital platform for intercultural dialogue and collaboration.
12–1pm, Tuesday 28 April 2026
Gallery Central (North Metropolitan TAFE)
