OUTSIDER Film Screening, Art Opening and Reception Tomorrow, Saturday March 28, 2026 | 5pm - 8pm *free valet parking a 40-min award-winning documentary about the late Maury Ornest, mental illness, family, and the power of art to sustain a life. Art opening and reception to follow. "Like a contemporary Munch or Van Gogh, Maury’s paintings create a searing self portrait of his battle with madness while also demonstrating his ability to be playful and whimsical when not tortured by psychosis.” Dr. David Fogelson Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA OUTSIDER (40min., Audience Award Winner for Best Short Film at the Montclair Film Festival) presents a rarely seen, candid view of a family's journey with mental illness and captures how art has the profound ability to sustain a life. The film, narrated by Gary Gulman, chronicles Maury Ornest, a professional baseball player whose life took a turn after his first psychotic break. At his therapist’s suggestion he began to paint, and what began as a coping strategy turned into a lifelong passion. After his death at the age of 58, his sister Laura discovered more than 1400 paintings and more than one hundred journals, a discovery which sent her on an unexpected journey. Maury Ornest's paintings will be for sale with all proceeds going to charity; either Didi Hirsch or UCLA Friends of Semel Institute. Gestures of Love: Anyone who lost their home in the Palisades or Eaton fires may choose an original piece of art to take home as a free gift from OUTSIDER Project's Gestures of Love program. The works of art are being gifted as symbols of hope, resilience, and new beginnings. FEMINA A Pop-Up Exhibition Considering the Female Gaze EXTENDED UNTIL SUNDAY MARCH 1st! Open by Appointment How do we inhabit our bodies as women? What does it mean to translate an internal landscape —emotional, sensual, psychological—into the external language of the photograph? These works ask us to consider how the female self can be seen, felt, and understood when authored by those who live its truth. Do not miss this amazing show! #art #artist #exhibition @gallery169 #canyonsquare #santamonica #losangeles

What a beautiful exhibition and opening last night at Femina! Thank you @sal.taylorkydd for curating an exquisite collection of art by such talented artists and for having a great eye for how it should all look on the walls. And the incredible @gallery169 gallery! The big windows, warmth of the space. I’m grateful to be a part of it. . Here’s a little taste of what last night looked like. But go take a look at what @sal.taylorkydd posted yesterday on her feed about the exhibition of a closer up view of the work and a bit of background on what the show is about. . Congratulations to @joann_chaus @alinesmithson @jmcclurephoto @alexandra_defurio and @shariyantra for works sold on opening night!! . Thank you @benjaminmillerla001 @doodiedotcom @natalie_kalustian @adrianathevoice @alanbeingalan @etjoseph @cherylwalshfineart @livtla @sodachris @jeffblizzard @pilatesheather @marysalardino @theglobalactivista , Michael, Esme, @lisacoburn for being there last night. TODAY 10-4PM TONIGHT RECEPTION 5-8 @gallery169 Free valet for the reception FEMINA A Pop-Up Exhibition Considering the Female Gaze TWO DAYS ONLY February 21–22 10AM - 4PM OPENING RECEPTION Saturday Feb 21 from 5-8pm Femina is a two-day pop-up exhibition at Gallery 169 in Santa Monica, on view Saturday, February 21 through Sunday, February 22, featuring the work of nine female artists whose photographs explore the layered, evolving experience of womanhood through portraiture and self-portraiture. Bringing together artists Jo Ann Chaus, Sarah Hadley, Alexandra De Furio, Shari Yantra Marcacci, Aline Smithson, Sal Taylor Kydd, Catherine Just, Erica Kelly Martin, and Jennifer McClure, Femina offers an intimate and expansive meditation on female identity—its contradictions, tenderness, strength, and transformation. Female identity is a shifting kaleidoscope—an ever-turning constellation of roles, memories, and embodied experience. This exhibition brings together women artists whose work opens new ways of seeing and sensing womanhood, each exploring the complexities of the female form and the stories carried within it. Through portraiture and self-portraiture, these photographers reclaim the gaze and turn it inward. Their images go beyond the objectified view of the female body and explore how it feels from within: the pulse of interiority, the terrain of longing, resilience, desire, and becoming. How do we inhabit our bodies as women? What does it mean to translate an internal landscape —emotional, sensual, psychological—into the external language of the photograph? These works ask us to consider how the female self can be seen, felt, and understood when authored by those who live its truth. #art #artist #exhibition @gallery169 #canyonsquare #santamonica #losangeles #canyonsquare @frankhlangen @rusticoffee @thecanyongrocer @replenishsantamonica @gallery169 @inthecanyon #santamonica #palisades #beachlife #california
