Jack Tworkov 1900-1982: Pioneer of Abstract Expressionism at DE SARTHE I barely knew about him, even though he was among other abstract impressionists who founded the New York School. Also it was a fun surprise to learn that he was an elder brother of Janice Biala! An exhibition you have to spend time on to appreciate the development of techniques and approaches. Exhibition period: 20.03–9.05 Gallery address: 2/F, Block A, Vita Tower, Wong Chuk Hang #jacktworkov #desarthegallery #abstractexpressionist #abex #hkgallery @desarthegallery

Brandon Tay: HEX STATE SERVER at Square Street Gallery
Is it an oracle machine? Is it a complex digitalization of I Ching system? Is it an exploration of people’s locus of control and their system of beliefs? Is it a multilayered approach to depicting the history of Chinese philosophy? Is it an experiment set to see how deep the visitors are eager to dive in? Is it an exhibition that is incredibly difficult to write about? Well, it is definitely one of the exhibitions where the artist, if you ask any questions, won’t answer them and probably will just add bunch more. Exhibition period: 20.03–9.05 Gallery address: G/F, 21 Square Street, Sheung Wan #brandontay #squarestreetgallery #artinstallation #artproject #hkgallrery @squarestreetgallery @brozm @rafiabdullah.apt @yeoworkshop @niche.stitution

Slavs and Tatars: 胡 ( هو / who) are you? at Rossi&Rossi With interest in the region described as “east of the former Berlin Wall and west of the Great Wall of China”, it is no wonder that the art practice of the collective is so diverse, contrasting, contradictory, and vast. I particularly enjoyed the provocative milestones Not Berlin Not Bukhara and Not Bahamas Not Baghdad, which sit halfway between secular and sacral without choosing either side. Exhibition period: 21.03–9.05 Gallery address: 11/F, M Place, Wong Chuk Hang #slavsandtatars #rossiandrossi #hkgallery #artsculpture #artinstallation @rossiandrossi @slavsandtatars

Joshua Serafin: Grieve the Departed Wound at Tomorrow Maybe I love how cave-like the space looks with these works. Since all of them are about the healed wounds that the artist themselves experienced, the exhibition feels more reflective and contemplative while even though the art performances of Joshua are so fierce and powerful. Exhibition period: 20.03–10.05 Gallery address: 4/F Eaton HK, Jordan #joshuaserafin #artinstallation #artperformance #hkgallery #performanceartist @joshudoser @eaton.hk @tomorrowmaybe_hk

El Anatsui: MivEvi at White Cube To be perfectly frank, I hoped that one of the sculptures-tapestries downstairs would be a monumental piece — we don’t see something really large-scale in Hong Kong that often. Don’t get me wrong, I was still happy to see so many works by one of my favorite artists and admire the details (have you noticed the artist’s signature? See the last photo) Exhibition period: 25.03–9.05 Gallery address: 50 Connaught Road Central #elanatsui #whotecube #metalworks #hkgallery #artsculpture @whitecube

Mary Weatherford: Persephone at Gagosian An exploration and visual contemplation of light, darkness, change, and journey. I think knowing too much about Persephone’s myth isn’t helping me see much of its details in these paintings, but the narrative of the earth and the underworld’s juxtaposition is something I can definitely follow. Exhibition period: 24.03–2.05 Gallery address: 7/F Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Central #americanart #americanartist #neonart #gagosian #maryweatherford @gagosian @maryweatherford

Chan King Long Ken: What Hums in the Rain at Contemporary by Angela Li Love the poesy of the title — an invitation to stay still and listen to the white noise of nature. It is directly related to the artworks, that are both the suggestion to slow down and pay attention and a result of such actions. (Of course, the painting on the first photo is my favorite) Exhibition period: 12.03–2.05 Gallery address: G/F, 248 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan #hkart #hkgallery #hongkongartist #contemporarybyangelali #chankinglong @cbalhk @kinglong97

Lap-See Lam: Bamboo Palace, Revisited at Blindspot Gallery The centerpiece of the exhibition is a video installation, but since video art is notoriously difficult to photograph, here are photos of neon and glass sculptures. Recurring motifs of bamboo and mandarin/orange continue themes of migration, belonging, finding new places, and danger of losing identity. (Btw Russian word for the orange is апельсин (apel’sin); borrowed from the Dutch language it means Chinese apple) Exhibition period: 24.02–2.05 Gallery address: 15/F, Po Chai Industrial Building, Wong Chuk Hang #glasssculpture #neonart #videoart #blindspotgallery #lapseelam @blindspotgallery @see__see

Trevor Yeung: swallowing rumination, gracefully at Blindspot Gallery I love that it’s so easy to project personal associations onto these works. Is it a magic cave? Mysterious labyrinth? Enchanted garden? Whimsical collection, hidden in the attic? A result of the experiment of merging of natural and artificial? Your interpretation is as good as mine. Exhibition period: 24.02–2.05 Gallery address: 15/F, Po Chai Industrial Building, Wong Chuk Hang #blindspotgallery #trevoryeung #artinstallation #hkart #hkgallery @blindspotgallery @plantertrevor

Certainly at GOLD I don’t want to sound banal and remind you about the uncertain times we all live in, so let’s focus on what is certain instead. Certainly this a beautifully curated show. Certainly the space looks sophisticated and stylish. Certainly the selection of artists is exciting. Certainly Hong Kong needs more art spaces that are diverse and experimental. And certainly I am not biased in any way or form. South Ho Siu Nam, Tith Kanitha, Lousy, Shinro Ohtake, Pak Sheung Chuen, Peter Robinson, Richard Serra, Santiago Sierra, Maria Taniguchi, Weng Io Wong, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries.
