SYNESTHESIA: Black Music Visualized through Space, Fashion, & Materiality — a collection of album covers, 3D printed vinyls, and garments created to narrate an album photoshoot by @Syn8Star exhibited at @SVANYC / @SVAFineArts . “I have always viewed music as part of the electromagnetic spectrum. A form of sound waves which can generally be understood as something that can be heard and naked to the human eye – though music has always been something that I could touch, a physical object that I can see. Realistically, humanity can only see 0.0035% of all visible light which means that music is a physical wave, we just can’t see it. The electromagnetic spectrum is used to measure cosmic objects of the vast universe that can’t be seen, which has brought me to understand how my form of synesthesia – (a neurological condition where one sense automatically triggers another) influences my view on the relationship between music and fashion. Over time, music has been divided into a various number of genres, dependent on the difference in rhythm, beat, and tone. Harmonic sound waves of all kinds travel through invisible space and we create an experience using visual style and narration. It was my first time doing an album cover photoshoot and it was when I felt pulled to begin this lifelong study. An album cover that inspired me to incorporate the turntable was Planet Rock: The Album (1982) by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, illustrated by Jose Sanchez. The band travels on top of vinyl records, which also further inspired me to create the three-dimensional vinyl records. The album as a whole emphasizes that music does not only travel through space, but through time as well. This inspired me to design a “disco invasion,” communicating the emergence of disco music and that it had not disappeared. The CD for Glam Invasion (2026) mimics the exact narrative present in the album cover. I asked model Ju’el Martin to dress as if he was a member of Parliament-Funkadelic, a joint band lead by George Clinton. The ankh symbol embroidered on his sleeve is a symbol representing eternal life, and a symbol that has a resurgence during the Black Arts Movement to culturally connect with African roots. A composition that I deeply value in art is balance, specifically symmetry and the use of fractals. When listening to jazz music, the act of symmetry breaks apart freely.
