We are ONE WEEK OUT from our event with
@gaileyfrey 📚🌀🌈
From bookseller/co-owner Bee:
"The very best class I've ever had the pleasure of taking was a 'just-for-the-hell-of-it' class my senior year of college. Horror Fiction 101, an elective taught by one of the coolest women I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. (Heyyyyyyy Dr. Getty 👋🏻)
One of the core takeaways from this class was this - the horror genre always has and always will be a time capsule of current events. During the sexual revolution, when birth control had become more accessible and folks could enjoy themselves without fear of unwanted pregnancy - enter, the Slasher films the later 20th century, when 'The Slut'™️ is the first to die whilst hooking up with her boyfriend in the woods, a car, at her babysitting gig.
During the Red Scare in the 40s and 50s, the fear of being infiltrated, the terror of 'The Enemy Within' paved the way for 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' and 'Them!'
2026 seems like it will be the Year of Cult Horror. 🙃🙂🙃🙂🙃 The fear of unfamiliar outsiders, demand for uniformity and complacency, not-so-subtle religious undertones, and - most alarmingly for oh, so many reasons - the practical worship of fertility and procreation. I'll let your pretty little head suss out why that may be relevant right now.
Eep!
Make Me Better is a grand example of why
@gaileyfrey is a must-read author for me. This was a fantastic follow-up to Just Like Home and Spread Me. It felt like reading a Gailey - this author's ability to build resounding dread from the first paragraph of a book should be studied.
That's all I'm going to saaaaayyyyyy. Can't wait to foist this one upon everyone in May. Prepare for me to be insufferable.'
See you at 3PM on May 16th at the Grand View Viking Theatre!
@ltthompsonbooks
will lead what we're certain will be an incredible, provoking conversation.
