This is what we’re about.
Creating spaces where people feel safe enough to try something new, brave enough to share their voice and supported enough to stand on stage and be heard.
In just eight weeks, this group went from “I’m not sure I can do this” to performing in front of a packed room at @heistbrewcotap and absolutely smashing it.
And yes… one of our students, Martin, delivered a questionable joke on camera… but redeemed himself with a brilliant set at the showcase 👏

Last night was something special 🖤💚🖤
Over 100 people packed into @heistbrew to watch 10 brand new comedians take to the stage after just 8 weeks… and honestly? They absolutely smashed it.
Every single one of them got up there, owned the room, and delivered. Not just funny but brave, honest and completely themselves. The kind of comedy you can’t teach overnight.
What people don’t always see is the graft behind it:
the nerves, the rewrites, the “is this even funny?” moments, the courage it takes just to stand up and speak.
And then last night… they turned all of that into something brilliant.
We couldn’t be prouder.
This is exactly why we do what we do at Gags for Good, because when people are given the space, support and a mic… incredible things happen.
We’re very excited to see what this group does next 👀

A big thank you to @the.writersworkshop for inviting us to be part of today’s Writers’ Day.
We ran a session on writing stand-up comedy, exploring how writers can turn observations, characters and everyday frustrations into punchlines. The room was full of curiosity, creativity and some very funny ideas.
April also joined the panel discussion on stepping up to the mic, sharing insights into the realities of performing stand-up and how comedy writing differs from other forms of writing.
At Gags for Good, we’re passionate about using comedy to build confidence, connection and community, so it was fantastic to work with such an engaged group of writers.

Our International Women’s Day Comedy Night has been featured in the @sheffield_star and we can’t wait to bring this brilliant event to Sheffield this Sunday.
Hosted by @nicolescottcomedian and our Co-Founder @aprillouise_comedy , the night brings together a lineup of fantastic female comedians to celebrate women in comedy and raise money for an incredible cause.
Every act is donating their time so that all proceeds go to support the work of @ywca.yorkshire , helping women and young women across our region.
Expect big laughs, brilliant stories and a room full of energy as we celebrate International Women’s Day the best way we know how, by giving women the mic.

And while we’re still a young CIC (we launched in November!), we’re already on social prescribing lists here in Sheffield doing this work 🧡

Comedy is weirdly powerful when it comes to connecting people 🫶🏼
You can walk into a room full of strangers… and five minutes later you’re all laughing at the same stupid, specific thing. And suddenly it doesn’t feel like a room of strangers anymore.
That’s connection.
When someone says the awkward thing out loud and everyone laughs, it’s not just a joke landing. It’s people realising, “Oh. It’s not just me.”
That’s why we do what we do at Gags for Good.
Not to make comedians. To help people feel seen, heard and a little less alone.
Sometimes connection doesn’t always start with deep chats. It sometimes starts with a laugh. 🧡

Sometimes laughing is your brain going:
“Yeah. I can’t deal with this properly, so let’s chuck a joke at it.”
Psychology calls it regulation. I call it: if I don’t laugh, I’ll cry in Tesco.
A joke is sometimes just:
• a deep breath with a punchline.
• a way of saying “same”.
• cheaper than therapy (but never replaces it).
At Gags for Good, we don’t just teach people to be comedians. We teach people to use humour the way normal humans already do, to feel braver, lighter and slightly less feral.

📊 Women in Comedy the UK picture
• Research into the UK live comedy circuit suggests around a quarter to a third of stand-up comedians are women.
• UK TV comedy panel shows have historically featured significantly more men than women, despite improvement in recent years.
• Comedy courses, workshops and grassroots open mics in the UK often report near-parity or majority women at entry level.
So what’s happening?
Women are coming into comedy but many drop out before they’re regularly booked or paid.
This isn’t about talent.
It’s about retention, gatekeeping, confidence gaps, unpaid labour and who feels welcome in the room.
Comedy doesn’t need fixing.
The systems around it do.
That’s why we focus on supportive spaces, skill-building, and keeping people in comedy, not just getting them on stage once.
