An honor to see The Art Institute of Chicago’s Great Wave print alongside Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow as part of @chicagopubliclibrary One Book One Chicago. Because of its delicacy, the print can only be shown once every five years for three months at a time. The second photo shows the wall text, which features the jacket of Tomorrow by John Gall. That is to say, my book is currently on the wall of one of the finest museums in the world, something beyond even my wildest author dreams. You can see the Hokusai (and that tiny Tomorrow) until January 6th @artinstitutechi I don’t know how we get through any of it without art.
In a delightful bit of surreality, my publisher @vintagebooks has teamed up with Magic Eye to create an homage to Tomorrowx3. A Magic Eye made of Hokusai waves? Yesss. If you’re in London, why not see if you can decipher the secret message? Magic Eye x Vintage is across from the Old Vic until December 30th.
1) Deluxe edition of Elsewhere, celebrating its twentieth anniversary, is out this week. 2, 3) From the new edition, some reflections about its original pub day in 2005.
Authors for Kamala Harris! Featuring Roxane Gay, Jodi Picoult, Jennifer Weiner, Curtis Sittenfeld, and me. Next Monday the 12th. Registration link in bio.
This was very flattering for my two-year-old novel.
In other news, thank you to everyone who came out to hear me speak, the venues and bookstores that have hosted me, and the series of delightful conversation partners I’ve had. You’ve all been lovely. One last stop in Cambridge, MA tonight.
Thank you to graphic designer @chelsea_rae_butler for the most gloriously elaborate signing line present I have ever received. 1) an ART program from when Marx was in Twelfth Night 2) a CD-ROM of Ichigo, and 3) Sam’s back of envelope maze, framed by his grandmother. Scroll through to see it all. I love when the things I make make other people make things.
Thank you to everyone who came out this week, and all the booksellers and moderators who hosted me so generously. See you on the east coast!
Because you asked for it, we added one final stop in ***Cambridge, MA on July 15th.***The last Tomorrow tour now has a satisfying symmetry, beginning in LA and ending in Harvard Square. Thanks to @harvardbookstore and my publicist Emily Reardon for making it happen. Swipe for the whole schedule, including a ***NEW***venue in Toronto. Link to ALL events in bio and on the events page on my website.
This photo is the first time I visited Harvard when I was 17. 17 y.o. me is pretty annoyed to have her image used this way. Still into black blazers.
The Sam and Sadie in Harvard Square graphic is a frame from one of the winners of the @kingston.school.of.art Tomorrowx3 2022 trailer contest. You can find all the winning trailers on my website. They are delightful.
Honored to have written an introduction for the twentieth anniversary edition of CLOUD ATLAS, a book I both admire and love. (Not always the same thing!) Why do I admire a book? Because it makes me want to write better books and because it makes me believe that there is more to do with the novel. Why do I love a book? Who knows? Love is love. But, maybe in the case of CLOUD ATLAS, it’s because it makes me feel more connected to the universe and all the humans in it. Because it makes me feel.
The @sceptrebooks version of CLOUD ATLAS is absolutely stunning (sprayed edges, a cloth bookmark!) and is out in the UK now. The American edition will publish in September.
Does anyone read these captions? One last piece of business… we’re adding a stop to the tour, and I should have details about that soon
Delighted to find @nguyenphanquemai_ & @angiekimask front and center at Barnes and Noble the Grove, on a Sunday morning in AAPI Heritage Month. I blurbed both these novels, and I’m proud to be on their covers.
What I wrote about Happiness Falls
“A brilliant, satisfying, compassionate mystery that is as much about language and storytelling as it is about a missing father. I loved this book.”
And Dust Child
“Dust Child is satisfying, lyrical, and deeply empathetic. Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai is a born storyteller.”
In other bookstore news, I’ll be @zibbysbookshop on Tuesday night, talking to the terrifically smart @amandaeyreward about her new novel, Lovers and Liars. Jenny Jackson writes that it is "the sort of novel that simultaneously tempts you to devour it in one greedy gulp and begs you to slow down and savor each page.” You can trust Jenny about such things.
