Kitten with the assist during my Dig Your Own Grave solo practice 🤟🏼😽🤟🏼
Story Time! It was fall of 24’ and I was at home about to leave for a tour. I get an unexpected call from my muy buen amigo @davierperezortega asking me if I was interested in working on a new @devildriver record. Given I’d been a DD fan since I was a teen and their music and influence has found its way into many a song I’ve written, the answer was a resounding YES.
He asked me to write a demo so @dezfafara and the gang could see what I could do. I had about 3-4 free hours before entering full tour mode prep so I opened Cubase, grabbed my trusty 91’ @officialibanezguitars RG550 that you’re looking at in this video and put it in drop A because it’s the best 6 string tuning for metal, along with B standard and drop C, of course. And I just went for it!
Pretty much the entirety of Dig Your Own Grave came out in the next 3-4 hours, I sent it off to the guys and then I left for tour. The rest is history! Kinda 😅 It was the first complete song I wrote for Strike And Kill and after a couple lil Davo arrangement moves it was SOLID AS HELL.
Now, enter vocal recording with Dez, who was extremely fun to track might I add. We get to the chorus and I had an idea for some pitched screaming/dirty singing/whatever you wanna call it, it’s just a Lemmy impersonation at the end of the day. Before I can even give my idea to Dez he goes “put me in I got something” and NAILS pretty much exactly what I had in my mind on the first take. A profound synchronicity had occurred and Davi and I’s face lit up. After completing the track we added the monstrous GET TO DIGGING in classic DD Dez delivery at the beginning and boom, we had our single. DD was back 🤟🏼
While Dig may have been a track I wrote, the entirety of the SAK creation was a balanced team effort by my talented DD songwriting companions Davi, @devildriver_bass_legend , and @ibanezguy88 . Everyone in the band was absolutely vital to the creation and writing process and this record does not come out the way it does if one of us was missing.
