this is my third Ides of March celebrating the Feast of Anna Perenna, the ancient Roman goddess of the year. Offerings were made to her "that the circle of the year may be completed happily(*)." It was also just a massive Roman shindig. Now, this year so far hasn't given us much to celebrate, but here are some 2025-updated ideas for offerings we can make to Anna such that she might salvage the remaining nine months. (*) "ut annare perannareque commode licea", because praying in Latin might give it a boost.

I've spent the past few months imagining a very plausible scenario that could happen as soon as tomorrow. President Trump has repeatedly vowed to send armed forces into American cities to suppress dissent, assert federal control, and aid deportations, even if state and local leaders resist. This would be an unprecedented assault on democratic norms, constitutional freedoms, and civil liberties.

This week I debuted an immersive and interactive work of what-if “speculative journalism” documenting scenes of unchecked federal authority and bold grassroots defiance across San Francisco’s neighborhoods and communities—if these plans become reality. While I can’t deny my political leanings, I’ve worked to ground every element of this scenario in well-documented plans and the President’s own unambigous public statements. On a personal note, I’ve poured my whole self into this project, wondering lately if I’ve been forecasting and designing for 20 years just to be ready for this moment. I hope my project offers one example of how the design and futures communities can rise to meet the likely historic challenges ahead, by anticipating major disruptions to democracy and helping the public understand these implications and consequences. HAPPY ANNA PERENNA DAY!! Sure, today is the Ides of March, oooh “beware” and all that, but, far more importantly, today is the Festival of Anna Perenna, the beloved ancient Roman goddess of the year. Anna was the goddess of cycles of renewal and connecting the past to the present. The best part is how to offer blessings: “People would camp out…and picnic merrily into the night. They would feast, dance, sing and celebrate with wine, toasting to health and long life. As it was believed that one would live as many years as the cups of wine one could drink, it was of course traditional to get extremely drunk." Maybe the world isn’t in the right place this year for such full-on merriment, but even take a moment today to appreciate someone, find something to celebrate, realize gratitude, and make a conscious choice to choose joy.
