Join us for a roundtable with architectural historian and philosopher Branko Mitrović for a conversation on architecture, philosophy, and the ways intellectual fraud can emerge within contemporary architectural theory. The discussion will examine the relationship between architecture and philosophy, and the role philosophical language has played in shaping architectural theory over the past century. Mitrović’s work argues that architectural discourse has often relied on imported philosophical terminology—drawn from traditions such as phenomenology and deconstruction—frequently used without clear conceptual grounding, and sometimes serving to obscure rather than clarify architectural questions. In conversation with: Dr Fadi Shayya Dr Demetra Kourri Dr George Jepson Dr Hamid Khalili Dr Guillermo Sanchez Sotes Dr Sam Holden 🗓️ 26 Mar 11:00📍MTC 2.22 -Manchester School of Architecture @themsarch Hosted jointly by Humanities and Future Processes

🎮 World Making III: Immersive Environments In this session, we’ll dive deeper into rendering and visual delivery. We’ll explore how to create 360° images of your scene for external navigation, and experiment with the orchestration and movement of the virtual camera to enhance verisimilitude, spatial presence, and the overall experience of space. No previous experience with Unreal Engine is needed. We’ll cover the basics step by step. ﹗Just make sure you have Unreal Engine installed on your machine if you’d like to follow along during the session. 🗓️ 26 March 11:00📍MTC Studio A -Manchester School of Architecture @themsarch 🎟️ Make sure to book our next sessions via the link in bio. #MSA #FutureProcesses #Media #Architecture #EmergingTechnologies

Wonderful energy and amazing creativity! World making ll: In this workshop, we stepped into the world of world-building with Unreal Engine. Together, we created a simple environment, imported external 3D assets, experimented with atmosphere and lighting, and explored real-time rendering workflows. By the end of the session, participants were able to capture cinematic shots to present their work in a dynamic way. Thank you all for taking part! ✨ @themsarch

🎮 World Making II: Making Digital Environments In this workshop, we’ll step into world building with Unreal Engine. Together, we’ll build a simple environment, import external 3D assets, shape the atmosphere and lighting, and explore real-time rendering workflows. By the end, you’ll be able to create cinematic shots and export 360° images and videos to showcase your work in a dynamic way. No previous experience with Unreal Engine is needed. Many thanks to everyone who joined World Making I: Inscribing the Play We explored how spatial experience can be recorded and designed, looking at references from Labanotation, Philip Thiel, and The View from the Road, before introducing the VSCiogram as a way to map movement through game space. Through game demos and a hands-on workshop, participants sketched their own spatial sequences and translated them into architectural drawings. Great job everyone 👏🏻 @themsarch #MSA #ManchesterSchoolOfArchitecture #FutureProcesses #Architecture #GameDesign SpatialDesign EmergingTechnologies WorkshopRecap

🌏 World Making I: Inscribing the Play 🎮 This session explores how spatial experience can be notated and designed, drawing on traditions from Labanotation, Philip Thiel’s Sequence-Experience Notation, and the visual scoring methods of Donald Appleyard, Kevin Lynch, and John Myer in The View from the Road. Building on these foundations, we introduce the VSCiogram—a tool for mapping the visual, spatial, and cinematic parameters of a journey through game space. This workshop will present the VSCiogram method through interactive game-based demos, opening a discussion on how experience patterns in games can be read, compared, and designed. Participants will then take part in a hands-on workshop designing their own spatial sequences—sketching VSCiograms and translating them into architectural drawings. 🗓️ 23 Feb 14:00📍MTC Studio A -Manchester School of Architecture @themsarch 🎟️ Make sure to book our next sessions via the link in bio. #MSA #FutureProcesses #Media #Architecture #EmergingTechnologies

This architectural filmmaking (cinematography + editing) workshop offers a concise introduction to visual storytelling through space, composition, and movement. 🕚 In the first half, participants will explore the fundamentals of cinematography and editing, drawing on key theoretical perspectives from Sven Nykvist, James Monaco, and François Penz to understand composition, rhythm, atmosphere, and spatial narrative. 🕑 The second half shifts to hands-on practice, where participants will start familiarising themselves with editing and experiment with cinematic techniques in real time. ‼️IMPORTANT NOTE: Attendees should arrive with Adobe Premiere Pro already installed on their laptops in order to fully engage in the practical editing sessions. 🗓️ 16 Feb 11:00📍MTC Studio A -Manchester School of Architecture @themsarch 🎟️ Make sure to book our next sessions via the link in bio. #MSA #FutureProcesses #Media #Architecture #emergingtechnologies

🔊 Soundscape This workshop will be run by our very own @drraylucas The session will focus on sound, moving from a discussion of the groundbreaking conservationist approach to soundscapes developed by R. Murray Schafer toward broader considerations of how sound can be designed, drawing on the work of Augoyard & Torgue. We will also explore cinematic examples, including the editing practice of Walter Murch and the films of directors Peter Strickland and Kleber Mendonça Filho 🎛️ Dr Ray Lucas will present a series of experiments to open discussion on the architectural potential of sound design. In the afternoon, participants will take part in a hands-on workshop constructing a sonic portrait of a building—such as the MTC—modelled on his piece Bird Stair, created in collaboration with anthropologist Liz Hallam. 🗓️ 9 Feb 11:00📍MTC Studio A -Manchester School of Architecture @themsarch 🎟️ Make sure to book our next sessions via the link in bio. #MSA #FutureProcesses #Media #Architecture #EmergingTechnologies

🔮 Speculative Futures In this workshop, we’ll explore the key principles and fundamentals of speculative design and design fiction. We’ll discuss how these approaches challenge present-day assumptions and open up alternative ways of imagining the future. Through selected examples—from Metropolis and Black Mirror to the imaginative worlds of Dr. Seuss—we’ll examine how speculative narratives are used to envision future cities and spaces, and how social, technological, and environmental ideas are translated into spatial and architectural visions 🎥 🗓️ 2 Feb 11:00📍MTC Studio A -Manchester School of Architecture @themsarch 🎟️ Make sure to book our next sessions via the link in bio. © Image credit: Metropolis (1927) Directed by Fritz Lang. #MSA #FutureProcesses #Media #Architecture #EmergingTechnologies
