Future of Good’s Vinod Rajasekaran participated in Cooperation Canada’s International Cooperation Futures Forum Fishbowl on Global Philanthropy in Ottawa yesterday.
The conversation acknowledged the heaviness of the moment but also highlighted the promise of philanthropy to fund areas of development that cannot / will not be funded by government donors.

Two new federal bills, C-59 and C-69, have received royal assent, making it easier for business owners to create Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) and share wealth with employees. These bills offer incentives for owners to sell their companies to trusts, allowing employees to gain ownership without out-of-pocket expenses. Loans are paid off from company profits, and employees begin to receive dividends. 📈
With nearly three-quarters of small business owners planning to retire in the next decade, EOTs are seen as beneficial for promoting company growth, retaining local businesses, and enhancing employee retention. Bill C-59 provides up to $10 million in tax-free capital gains for owners selling to an EOT, while Bill C-69 aims to further encourage such sales. Key provisions include extending the capital gains reserve, a $10 million capital gains exemption, and allowing loan use as a tax deduction. 💼
