Come say hi 💜❤️💜
Ten years ago Prince passed away. He is one of our biggest music influences. But April is also significant because he released his debut record 'For You' on 7 April 1978 - one in which he wrore, produced, arranged, composed and performed all the songs. He was 19 at the time 💜

Today marks ten years since the passing of one of the greatest musical forces ever to live. The first time I ever cried when a musician died. I was lucky enough to watch Prince live not once, but twice, when he did a 21-night residency in Los Angeles, playing at The Forum in Inglewood and making the tickets $25 so that people could afford the tickets. He performed for around four hours straight each time, with a different repertoire (because he just had that much of music), not only displaying his skill as a brilliant composer, but also a performer and musician.
Truly it has made all other live performances pale in comparison ever since that moment. May he always be remembered for the deep contribution he gave to music. 💜💜💜

📢🔈🔊 We're excited by this anouncement yo! @futurenostalgia_ has joined Khamissa Art Festival as a partner and collaborator for all things Festival 🔥. We're super excited by this collab...
_Future Nostalgia is a music and art collective that has hosted regular listening sessions in South Africa since 2013.The idea behind the collective is sharing music through exploring records. They are guided by the philosophy of ‘For Selectors, Collectors, Deejays and Diggers’ celebrating the universal love for music and creating a free open space to gather in the spirit of community. They approach work through a DIY-perspective which necessitates building from the ground-up in the form of events that feature original artworks, exhibitions, live painting, projections, documentary screenings, spoken word poetry, live music performances and zine-making._

Stoked to have Shades of Jazz, @futurenostalgia_ at the Fest. Boya!
Shades of Jazz is the visual and graphic arm of @futurenostalgia_ - a multidisciplinary arts collective formed in 2013 by a group of artists, djs, journalists, filmmakers, musicians and activists. Musicians, artists and djs have, in turn, informed and inspired the collective expanding it into an extended community.
Shades of Jazz began in 2016, as an exhibition and screening, drawing inspiration from music activist culture in the history of the South African apartheid struggle. It now incorporates all visual and graphic media produced by Future Nostalgia - from zines to graphic art and posters - in celebration of our artistic heritage and culture.

Legend Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim was in good spirits earlier ahead of his performance at the Cape Town Jazz festival which was meant to take place years ago but was cancelled due to Covid. Cryptic as he usually is but very open, some things he had to share:
"We are sound scientists. We deal with sound"
"We dealing with sound and time
" Time is a strange concept" "We are not jazz musicians. "
"There is no past. There is no future. "
"What's the use of tradition? What can you do with tradition besides sell it. "
"What is my mother tongue?
The TRUTH"
He spoke about the importance of education, knowing South Africa through the landscape and learning it's original history (not the one taught in schools).
He also spoke about the Japanese concept of ikigai and how energy is stored in the gut, something common to many cultures.

You'll find kindred spirits no matter where you are on the planet. This is Chinthaka and Poornima, the lovely couple who are artists, DJ and sound archivists who run the incredible @cocaartanddesign space in Colombo. They also have an amazing collection of 60s, 70s and 80s albums from shellac to vinyl and presented talks and listening sessions on the history and significance of this music as part of @colomboscope . Like @futurenostalgia_ , their emphasis is on culture, listening and community.
This is their space and some of the great records they have in it. Chinthaka was also kind enough to let me use his turntables (very cool which he customised with purple lights) for the opening night DJ set.
If you're ever in Colombo, make sure to check out the great work they do. ❤️❤️

Presenting sonic lecture about the important role of jazz and musicians during apartheid through listening, today in Joburg - something I've written on and worked on for years - but there is still so much to learn and dig into and unearth... Always in the process of studying.
Big thanks to the @blackfuturewa , @omonblanks , @el_metalo and the @thelibraryo for hosting.

Excited and humbled to announce that I am in Sri Lanka as part of exhibiting work at @colomboscope for the first time. This is month's of work that came together while I was recovering from surgery and being bedridden. The story tells important South African history digging into the first black-owned jazz record label As-shams, Johannesburgs iconic record store Kohinoor and the iconic visionary who created it all Rashid Vally. The exhibition features four major collages (snippets pictured) of archival, an journalistic interview mix or oral histories as well as display of album covers and music. The major work produced out of this is a comprehensive zine titled 'A Journey into the Sun' which tells this story.
For Colomboscope, I am DJing the opening event tonight in a few hours, doing a sonic lecture on the exhibition tomorrow and another workshop later in the week about the Bismillah zine. More info in the thread.
Thanks to all who have showed interest in the zine thus far. I'll make sure these get to South Africa ✊🏾❤️
With thanks to @natasha_ginwala for guidance and @boeta_gee for layout and design work.
