During January 2025 through January 2026, my family and I embarked on the journey of pursuing citizenship for my mother. While the process was challenging and costly, we are grateful that it ultimately concluded positively, thanks in large part to the support and unity shown by our community.
As an artist, I believe it is essential to reflect on challenging the misconceptions of what we find normal. Although this experience was difficult and disheartening, I recognize that it is not unique to my family but is a widespread issue affecting many communities across the United States. With this in mind, I sought to create a message addressing these systemic challenges impacting families.
The mural depicts the Virgin of Guadalupe carrying a figure symbolizing safe passage, as she drops the handcuffs. The figure’s face features a peso, illustrating the harsh reality that financial means often determine one’s path to citizenship.
The mural stayed for quite some time. When I revisited this wall, I added a depiction of the Krampus, a devilish border patrol agent, representing the oppressive institutions that threaten our communities.
I recognize that this figure can be seen as sinister or taboo, especially within religious contexts. However, my primary goal was to raise awareness from a place of compassion and community care. I do not want us to accept or become complacent about current injustices. We are regressing further and further, and it’s crucial that we challenge these institutions.
Although someone had chosen to erase this message with whitewashing, I remain committed to its importance. Our message is one of solidarity, resilience, and love for our community.
That’s why I am collaborating with Thai Tea Films and Reds Body Art to honor cultural resistance and unity.
This video project will be showcased at my exhibit, “Una Voz del Barrio,” at the Carver Center on May 15th.

Shot this masterpiece in New York last year around early Nov. Had the pleasure to work with a great tattoo artist to come up with a wild concept, shooting a one day run and gun shoot. Check out @a.k.a.noodles & his amazing art work!
