I always love playing at Simon Baile’s ExCellar Wine Merchants in Kingston. He and his team are great hosts, and our format — Pete Roth and I inviting a sax, trumpet or trombone player, plus a different drummer each month — is really good fun and always exciting.
In particular, we always try to play the favourite standards of the “lead” player, which brings new challenges every time. Last night was exactly like that, with a very enthusiastic and engaged crowd, and Paul Jordanous, Pete and Rich Carter really played their socks off.
Looking forward to our next one on June 19, featuring Simon Allen on saxophone. By the way, Simon and Paul were the Redtenbacher's Funkestra horn section for many good years.
Oh yes, and heads up: Pete will be performing with his band, the Pete Roth Trio - PRT , at The Stables MK in Milton Keynes. We’ve invited Carter Arrington to stand in for him, followed by a Funkestra show at SaxoFest in Oxfordshire on Saturday 20, where the Funkestra will play with Carter and a three-piece horn section featuring Paul Jordanous, Tom Kleyn and Frank Walden.
So much excitement — but before all that: Canada with the Pete Roth Trio featuring Bill Bruford, where I’ll be standing in for Mike Pratt.
