Welcome to the new Functionals - van Esch and Functionals have joined forces
Functionals was born from the merger of van Esch and Functionals. As of January 2025, the two brands - both part of the same family firm - have merged into one. This new chapter honours the shared legacy, while setting the stage for a strong future.
van Esch + Functionals. A bond as strong as steel
A fresh look for an enduring design.
Originally developed for Van Esch and designed by @bedauxdebrouwer , this distinctive building continues to reflect its architectural roots, now under its current name, Functionals. With the updated signage in place, the identity of the brand is once again clearly expressed in its surroundings.
We captured the building in its renewed state, marking this next chapter where architecture and brand come together seamlessly.
“Form, function, thrill.” Geckeler Michels
It’s all about the details. From the precision of the folded steel to the subtle cut-outs that make every module easy to carry, every element of Ossa is designed with intention. Inspired by the simplicity of a moving box, yet crafted in durable materials, Ossa balances strength with refinement.
Steel is at the heart of Functionals. Renowned for its strength, durability, and versatility, it perfectly aligns with our commitment to quality and functionality. But it’s not just the material that defines us, it’s the hands and eyes of skilled craftsmen behind every piece.
In this moment, our specialists carefully inspect each detail, ensuring that every curve and finish meets our exacting standards. This consistent attention to quality allows us to confidently offer a 25 year warranty, so designs like the Wendela chair are made to be relied on for years to come.
Small but special
In many projects, drilling is no longer allowed, or clients simply want to minimize floor-mounted elements. That’s why a magnetic solution, specially designed for @vanderlande.official , was the perfect fit here.
We always aim to collaborate closely and find the best solution for every project, no matter how unique the requirements.
A refined expression of our showroom concept, fully executed in oxide brown.
Our signature products, the HJW coat rack, Ben bench and Ditch waste bin, come together in a setting that demonstrates how thoughtful design and a unified aesthetic naturally bring structure and clarity to a space. This composition perfectly illustrates our brand promise of organising spaces.
OUR STUDIO GOT AN UPGRADE:
We installed the BEN BENCH for @functionals outside our studio (yes, in the rain) and turned it into a proper lunch break spot.
Also sharing a few thoughts on the design along the way.
“Good design is honest, clear, and functional. It doesn’t shout for attention but finds its place naturally, blending form and function into something timeless.” @kaschkasch_official
KASCHKASCH works with some of the most exciting companies in furniture and lighting design and is known for smart modular designs and timeless pieces. Their small team continuously explores innovative ideas, driven by the discourse of function over aesthetics and aesthetics over function — an approach that is also reflected in the design of the Ben Bench they created for us.
Ditch, Tertio and HJW at KMSKA
At the @kmska_museum Antwerp, following the renovation by KAAN Architecten, we contributed to the renewed interior with a selection of our core products.
Ditch, Tertio and HJW are applied throughout the museum. Each product was selected for its architectural clarity, durability and suitability for high-traffic public environments, supporting both functionality and the overall spatial concept.
A project in which design supports the setting without competing with it.
We’re proud to announce that Functionals has officially returned to the UK market.
With over 25 years of experience in the UK, including projects for institutions such as the Bank of England and Wimbledon, our return marks a new chapter. Following the merger of van Esch and Functionals, we now operate internationally under one strong name: Functionals.
In partnership with @wellteklondon , our official UK distributor, we continue to organise spaces with functional design that lasts a lifetime, from coat racks and lockers to waste sorting bins, tables and seating. Designed in collaboration with European designers and largely produced in our own factory in Goirle, backed by a 25-year guarantee.
We look forward to supporting architects, interior designers and workplace professionals across the UK.
Merging two brands is about the details.
This week we received the iconic Tubulus 100 coat hangers updated with our new logo. A small detail, but a meaningful one. It shows how even the little things reflect the process of merging two brands.
Branding isn’t just about a new name, it’s also about carrying your identity through the details, right down to the objects people use every day.
This morning we had the pleasure of welcoming @christoph_ulrich_seyferth , the designer behind our iconic Lloyd Table. A great moment to celebrate a long-standing collaboration built on craftsmanship, functionality, and timeless design.
Originally designed for the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy in Amsterdam, the Lloyd Table has grown into a true design classic. Its elegant, poetic form features a smart metal tabletop that subtly flexes, ensuring stability even on uneven floors, a refined balance between engineering and aesthetics.
Thank you, Christoph, for the inspiration and partnership over the years.
