Jordan Cordero C/O28’ is a sniper from deep. Cordero scored 31 points with 7 threes at the Pangos BEST OF SoCal Showcase Top 40 & 20 Sophomore games. He can pull up off the dribble with a quick shooting motion but also has great spacing to allow for open knockdown buckets. Quick hands and good anticipation on defense create steals and deflections. Cordero excels in the transition game with timely passes. With defenders having to respect his range and shooting threat, he reads the defense to dish to the open man for high percentage shots. Jordan plays his high school ball for Brea Olinda and returns for his junior year this fall.
Keith Childs C/O27’ scored 23 points in 54 minutes playing two games at the Pangos Best of SoCal Showcase. What stood out more than points was the 5’11” guards relentless attack on the offensive glass with 10 of his 16 rebounds cleaning up the offensive boards. If you’re looking for a guard that loves the dirty work, Childs will give you tough minutes getting his points off missed shots and in transition. His best play of the day was a blocked shot and taking it coast to coast for a tough lay in. Defensively he can play pressure defense and got up and over ball screens. Keith returns to LA Jordan HS for his Senior season next fall.
Major Smith C/O29’ had a standout day playing in the Pangos Best of SoCal Top 20 Frosh game. Smith scored 21 points shooting 75% from the field 9-12, including 3-6 from beyond the arc. He was active on the boards with 6 rebounds and consistently made quality passes that led to points with 8 assists. Ball handling is above average using the dribble for purpose. One of his best takes was a behind the back dribble to counter a steal attempt and spinning back to his left finishing with a short jumper. Played physical in the paint rebounding and immediately going into attack mode. Smith has nice vision in the pick and roll and in the open court finding teammates for high percentage shots. Major returns to Edison HS for his Sophomore season this fall.
Joe McGill C/O27’ LA Jordan HS took part in the Pangos Best of SoCal Showcase Top 40 & 20 Juniors games. McGill scored 19 points shooting 9-19 from the field with 11 rebounds in two games playing 45 minutes. With a 6’5” frame he used his height with a nice 5 foot jump hook and also came up with a big block in the paint. Joe is a threat in the open floor as three of his buckets were in the transition game. McGill returns to LA Jordan HS for his Senior season this fall.
Logan Elo C/O27’ scored 10 points shooting 3-7 from the field including 2-4 from three in the Pangos Top 40 Juniors Best of SoCal showcase. Elo excelled in the transition game spotting up for a couple of knock down threes. He dished 4 assists in the game trying to get others involved and took care of the ball with 0 turnovers. Elo helped his (white jersey) team to a 16 point win in the Top 40 Juniors game. Logan returns to Santa Margarita high school for his Senior season this fall.
Ezekiel Vernis C/O30’ will be an incoming freshman this fall playing up in the Pangos Best of SoCal Top 20 Frosh game scoring 20 points, off 7-16 shooting. The rest of his stat line was what impressed most grabbing 7 rebounds, 6 steals and dishing out 6 assists. Vernis plays like a true point guard with excellent ball control & above average court vision. The ability to see the floor and anticipate puts him at an advantage with the ball in his hands. He’s constantly in attack mode and has good balance on when to score and when he can put a teammate into a great scoring opportunity. Eyes are always up and is comfortable dribbling and passing left or right. His on ball pressure is relentless and timing for steals lead to easy buckets in transition. This young prospect is one to watch this fall high school season as he’ll join servitehoops in the Trinity league.
Zaire Rasshan C/O27’ (Damien HS) was the shining star at the Pangos Best of SoCal Showcase scoring 38 points (16 & 22) playing 50 minutes in two games. Rasshan is a highly skilled shooter with some wiggle that can get his own shot anytime he wants whether it’s off the dribble or spotting up. Deadly from three, Zaire hit 8 threes and shot 15-31 from the field. His handles are solid and he’s comfortable in the open floor with great court vision. Although he’s hunting for a good shot, his unselfish play finds open teammates setup for open looks. Defensively he moves his feet and is not afraid of contact. Active hands and good anticipation create deflections and steals. Listed at 6’3” Rasshan grabbed 5 rebounds in each game and showed above average instincts to start the transition game. High basketball IQ along with good decision making showed with 0 turnovers on the day. Rasshan will be entering his senior season for the defending D1 State Champion Damien Spartans next fall.
Hunter Caplan C/O27’ one of Southern California’s top shooting guards showed that he is a 3-level scorer at the Pangos Best of SoCal Showcase. Caplan connected three time from beyond the arc but also showed his ability to create space and get a clean midrange jumper. Caplan can get out in transition and was aggressive to the bucket scoring a lefty layup. His unselfish play also setup teammates with quality open shots. In 25 minutes of work, Hunter scored 16 points shooting 5-12 from the field including 3 from downtown. He grabbed 4 rebounds with 2 assists and took care of the ball with 0 turnovers. Caplan helped lead his “white jersey” squad to an 87-70 win. Hunter led his HS Crean Lutheran to a CIF Div. 1 Southern Section Title this year and returns for his Senior season as one of California’s top shooting guards.
