Sunday marks the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster.
On 26 April 1986 the world’s worst nuclear accident occurred in Soviet Ukraine. A catastrophic explosion released vast amounts of radiation across Europe. Thousands were displaced and the consequences to long-term health are still being calculated.
Although it was seized on 22 February 2022, the first day of the invasion, Russian forces withdrew on 31 March 2022. Today, the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and Nuclear Power Plant remain off limits.
The current situation at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is precarious, with nuclear safety risks heightened following a Russian drone strike in February 2025 and continuing military activity in the surrounding area.
In the book ‘Chernobyl: A Stalkers Guide’ (FUEL, 2020) author Darmon Richter journeys into the Zone and the NPP, venturing deeper than any previous account. Combining photographs of discoveries made over numerous visits, with the voices of those who witnessed history, he explores ghost towns and Soviet monuments lost deep in irradiated forests. After gaining exclusive access inside the most secure areas of the power plant itself, he joins the ‘stalkers’ of Chernobyl, setting out on a high-stakes illegal hike to the heart of the Exclusion Zone.

Details of control panels taken from our new book ‘Soviet Scientific Institutes’, by Eric Lusito.
In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many institutes were left destitute, their sophisticated technology condemned to extinction. But some scientists persevered, adapting to the new landscape. Today, defying the odds, they persist – even in wartime – to continue their work.
Lusito gained unique access to sites across former republics and satellites of the USSR – from a cosmic ray research centre in the remote Armenian mountains, to one of the world’s largest radars located in Ukraine, which locals believed to be a climate-altering weapon.
Publication date 30 April. Pre-order now on our website.

In Soviet Scientific Institutes photographer Eric Lusito takes us on a journey through time, space and science. Gigantic control panels, monumental telescopes, inexplicable machinery – the facilities he documents might be found in comic book and graphic novel fantasies or the science fiction of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.
