“Lawyers have asked the ICC to investigate 122 European officials for crimes against humanity in the Mediterranean.”
After six years of investigation, Front-Lex lawyers Omer Shatz and Juan Branco filed a 700-page case based on confidential EU documents, interviews, and evidence of abuses tied to EU migration policies.
6 years of investigation.
70+ EU officials interviewed.
122 suspects named - from heads of state to bureaucrats.
Crimes: 25,000 deaths, 150,000 victims of torture, rape, and enslavement.
“The law of the ICC was born out of European crimes but only applied so far to crimes committed outside of Europe. Our request is simple: to apply the law impartially, also upon European nationals.”

Selfies at crime scenes—this is what Libyan militias do every day with impunity, something that would not be possible if they did not know that European politicians and institutions are backing them.
They capture vulnerable refugees fleeing Libya at gunpoint and force them back to Libya, where they are subjected to torture, rape, arbitrary detention, forced labor, and death.
The boats used to carry out these interceptions are supplied by Europe.
This is why we are calling on the @internationalcriminalcourt to investigate European governments, its politicians and institutions for aiding and abetting crimes against humanity in Libya.
These militias are from the Tobrouk, section which is under Tariq Bin Ziad.
After a boat carrying 105 people from Libya towards Italy capsized on Sunday, at least 70 people died, 32 survived, and many others remained missing. Interviewed by Publico about the increasing obstacles thrown in the way of Search and Rescue missions, front-LEX co-director Iftach Cohen points to Frontex systematically obstructing search-and-rescue efforts by failing to alert nearby NGO rescue ships and instead notifying Italian and Libyan authorities, which exposes people to interception, forced return, torture, slavery, and death. The @eucourtofjustice recently made a first step on holding Frontex accountable for crimes committed in the Aegean Sea - it is high time it takes similar steps to protect people crossing the central Mediterranean.

The EU is complicit in crimes against humanity by helping the Libyan coast guard send people to cruel and inhumane detention centers - if you or anyone you know are victims of the Central Mediterranean route and have stories to share, message @front_lex or leave a comment.

Frontex’s own Fundamental Rights Officer, Jonas Grimheden, found that Greece uses Afghan paramilitaries to torture and push back asylum seekers to Turkey. Article 46(4) requires Frontex to end its operations in Greece.
The @eucourtofjustice has recently affirmed exactly that. But the Fundamental Rights Officer recommended doing exactly the opposite of what the law requires: “to increase presence and be more actively involved” in Greece.

Everyone knows what is going on in Libya. In an interview with Dutch newspaper Kanttekening, front-LEX legal director Iftach Cohen is clear that Frontex's Executive Director cannot hide behind supposed ignorance.

This is why it is essential to take legal action against Frontex, not just against EU member states. Throwback to the clip from Rai 3 on Alaa's case against the border agency, and the moment we found out we won the appeal.

WE STILL NEED €2000 TO KEEP KARIM SAFE IN LIBYA WHILE HIS CASE AGAINST FRONTEX IS PENDING.

📢 Help Karin stay alive in Libya until the @eucourtofjustice decides his case against Frontex
Karim is a young asylum seeker from Darfur, Sudan. He is trapped in Libya, where simply being a Black refugee means living under constant threat of abduction, extortion, and arbitrary detention by armed groups. Karim has been diagnosed with diabetes and needs consistent care, medication, and safe access to food, none of which is stable or safe where he is. Since the case was filed in 2024, Karim has been forced to move shelters more than 35 times. While he is being pushed from place to place to survive, the judges still haven’t declared that Frontex’s pull back operations are unlawful, a declaration that will help Karim escape from Libya and protect his life. Each day of delay is another day he has to stay hidden, sick, and at risk.
We are urgently raising €2,500 to cover:
🚨Emergency medical care for his illness
🚨Safe shelter to relocate him to a more secure location
🚨Daily essentials like food, clean water, and medicine
🚨Ongoing support so he can remain safe until he can make an attempt to flee Libya.

The 1st #icc trial accusing a Libyan of #crimesagainsthumanity against 'migrants', committed on the Central Mediterranean route, is scheduled to start in May 2026. Front-LEX will be there to represent the victims of hashtag #El_Hishri.
The cases of 122 other co-perpetrators, hashtag #EU and Member States officials, are still waiting to be processed by the Prosecutor, front-LEX co-director Dr. Omer Shatz told the national TV of Catalonia, 3Cat Corporatiu.
On the day the judgment in Hamoodi v Frontex was delivered. We were in Manheim at Alaa Hamoodi’s home. The team of RAI 3, with journalist Giuseppe Ciulla, came to capture the moment for Italian TV. When the judges ruled in our favour, we burst into joy. Alaa’s answer to RAI 3’s question, after the decision, says it all: “Today’s judgment is a great victory and not only for me!” Iftach Cohen, Co-Director of Front-LEX, explains it further to the journalist: “Thousands of people who, until now, had no chance of simply accessing the Court. I’m not talking about winning or losing a case - just knocking on the Court’s door and seeing a judge willing to provide judicial protection.”It took five years to obtain this decision. Convincing the highest court in the EU takes time and money. If you can support help us out with a donation, link in our bio. #humanrights #Pushbacks
