In elephant country, nothing is ever truly “set and forget.” Camera traps are often nudged, inspected, or sometimes completely taken apart—curiosity and intelligence make elephants both fascinating subjects and the biggest challenge in the field. And truth be told, it’s only fair… we place these devices in their home and hope they ignore them. But every now and then, patience pays off. A quiet, beautiful moment—an elephant mother and her calf moving gently through the forest, captured through a DSLR camera trap with minimal disturbance. There’s a sense of calm here, a reminder of the deep bonds and quiet rhythms that exist within these forests, far away from human noise. Fringe Ford continues to stand as a powerful example of what coexistence can look like. Through conscious land stewardship, rewilding, and a commitment to sustainability, it has become a space where wildlife like this can move, feed, and thrive with minimal interference. Massive thanks to the owners and management of Fringe Ford for their unwavering support and vision. Grateful to the wonderful staff for their warmth and hospitality, and to the incredible naturalist Shaji—whose help, support, and field knowledge have been absolutely invaluable. And last but certainly not least, heartfelt thanks to my good friend @pruthvi04 —this project wouldn’t be possible without your constant help, support and guidance. #elephant #cameratrap #cameratrapping #camtraptions #cameratraps

A quiet presence of the forest—the Indian Barking Deer, or muntjac, captured deep within the Western Ghats of Kerala. Known for its sharp, dog-like alarm calls, this shy and solitary species is often heard long before it is seen. Photographed using a DSLR camera trap with minimal flash, this image reflects a conscious effort to document wildlife without disturbing its natural behavior. In landscapes like Fringe Ford, where rewilding and sustainable practices are actively encouraged, species like the barking deer continue to find refuge and thrive. Such spaces are becoming increasingly vital as natural habitats shrink, offering a rare balance between human presence and wilderness. Massive thanks to the owners and management of Fringe Ford for their unwavering support and commitment to coexistence and conservation. Grateful to the staff for their warmth and hospitality, and to our incredible naturalist Shaji, whose help, support, and field knowledge have been absolutely invaluable. And last but certainly not least, heartfelt thanks to my good friend @pruthvi04 , this project wouldn’t have been possible without his constant support, guidance, and encouragement.

If you can let the land be it’s incredible the various forms of life in various sizes that thrives, one where we are deeply interconnected whether near or far, whether aware of it or not. It’s the wild that conserves us. Heart is full to spend a few days in such a place, one that has always felt as home.

Client review and photos: “Fringe Ford was an excellent escape, a 520-acre private plantation rewilded into a forest. It focuses on nature, with walks on forest trails, rustic rooms, delicious food and no Wi-Fi/cell service.. We enjoyed it! Room was comfortable, food and staff great, setting wonderful. We enjoyed the walks and our time with Shaji very much, he has worked as a guide, nature expert at Fringe Ford for 22 years.! He did a great job of balancing having us and four young guests at the same time. Morning walk was the best.” Photo credit: Jill Ferrer.

Sometimes, not often, you find a place that feels like it fits you. Fringe Ford did that for me. There’s nothing showy about it—just a place shaped by people who clearly care about the forest they protect. The Western Ghats wrap around you, the house runs off-grid without you ever feeling it, and everything is done with an easy honesty. Warm people, good food, amazing bio-diversity, guides who read the forest like a language, and conversations that stay with you. I left already wanting to return. The fireflies will pull me back. #macro #reptiles #snakes #vinesnake #wanayad #fringeford #westernghat #westernghatsofkarnataka #karnataka #indiawildlife #wildindia #wildlifephotography #wildlife
