Spring is here & so is garlic mustard 🌱
We’ll be hiking Rouge Park to take this fella out 11-1 starting at Sorenson! But if you’re out at Rouge(or anywhere) see it, pull it, eat it. This invasive plant spreads fast and crowds out native wildflowers that our ecosystems depend on. The good news? It’s edible, nutritious, and honestly… pretty delicious.
Turn stewardship into a snack:
Garlic Mustard Pesto
• 1 cup garlic mustard leaves (washed)
• ½ cup nuts or seeds (walnuts or sunflower seeds work great)
• ½ cup olive oil
• ¼ cup grated parmesan (optional)
• Juice of ½ a lemon
• Salt to taste
Blend it up and toss it on pasta, spread it on bread, or dip veggies in it.
Every plant you pull makes a difference. Every step you take builds a relationship with the land. Get outside, take care, and take some garlic mustard home with you 🌿
Fire has been an essential part of human’s relationship to this land since time immemorial. Essential for healthy prairie habitats, fire is a rejuvenating disturbance that prevents woody plant encroachment, removes accumulated dead plant litter, helps manage invasive species and cycles nutrients back into the soil. Without fire, prairies turn into shrublands and eventually forests. Through our partnership with Huron Clinton Metroparks and contractor Plantwise, the Rouge Park Prairie from Joy Road to near Tireman was burnt last week! Come visit the prairie to see the scorch for yourself! This will be a wonderful year to observe the prairie’s robust regrowth!
Shoutout to @detroitbirdalliance for helping make this happen!
Trees are blooming in Rouge Park and we can’t get enough! 🌸🌸🌸
