Select works from the Johannesburg Art Gallery collection are back in South Africa after nearly two years touring abroad. Co-curated by Khwezi Gule and Dr. Same Mduli, the exhibition reflects on belonging, return, and the histories embedded in institutional collections.
The exhibition is open to the public at the Standard Bank Art Gallery, Marshalltown, with safe underground parking available for visitors.

The JAG team will be installing a new exhibition between 1 and 12 November 2022. The new exhibition titled OCCUPATION will open on 13 November 2022. During the installation the museum will be closed.
Opening at JAG this Sunday: Senzeni Marasela's Waiting for Gebane
@senzenimarasela is one of South Africa's most prolific contemporary artists. Her practice spans more than 20 years and finds expression through a variety of media including relief prints, photography, fabric works, durational performance and often a combination of these. She uses autobiography as a starting point of her work to reflect on the social, economic and historical positioning of women in her own life particularly her mother as well as historical personages such as Sara Baartman. The exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery will consist of a selection of the works that were presented in the 2021 highly successful exhibition at @zeitzmocaa in Cape Town titled Waiting for Gebane.

The works in Ngoma: Art and Cosmology bring to the fore the entanglements of historical, physical, metaphysical and existential spheres of existence. Ngoma seeks to explore these spheres of existence through artworks that cover different beliefs, cultural practices, mythologies and cosmologies.

Join us at the Johannesburg Art Gallery for a workshop titled Comics: from idea to completion with cartoonist Mogorosi Motshumi. Motshumi has been a cartoonist for over 35 years and has worked as an editorial and sports cartoonist for varied publications including The Voice, City Press and Daily Sun. He is best known, however, for his monthly four-page comic about township life, Sloppy.
The workshop will be based largely on comic strips with a focus will be on gathering ideas, developing a unique sense of humour, and managing deadlines. The workshop is open to everyone.

This preliminary workshop will be centered on drawing and can be used as a baseline on why you decide on specific styles when working on your own comics. Loyiso Mkize is one of South Africa’s best-known graphic novel and comic book illustrators, known for SupaStrikers as well as Kwezi, South Africa’s very own homegrown superhero. Augmented Reality Workshop with Athenkosi Musoke and Nkululeko Reginald Sedibe, creator of augmented reality comic book Nomvula. Ray Whitcher, one of the curators of The Art of Comics, will be leading a workshop on the bare essentials of making a comic. No drawing or comic experience is needed, as the group will be working with general concepts of comics, starting with a brief history of comics, then writing, plotting (scamping) and, finally, making a 9-panel comic to take home.
