Ramadan is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge our Muslim colleagues.
We asked Ayşegül Özüdoğru
what Ramadan means to her and how she experiences this time while balancing her
professional responsibilities at Freudenberg.
“Fasting during
Ramadan is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. During this month, Muslims
fast daily from before sunrise, after having sahoor, until sunset, when we
gather for iftar. This means abstaining from all food and drink every day for
an entire month.
On a personal level,
Ramadan has both spiritual and emotional significance. Limiting what I consume
makes me far more aware of the small blessings. This awareness naturally builds
empathy toward people who do not have reliable access to these essentials. I
gain a deep sense of gratitude and renewal.
Growing up in Turkish
culture, Ramadan also carries many cherished traditions. Special foods like
pide (a Turkish flatbread) and güllaç (a dessert with milk, nuts, and
pomegranate) are part of it, drummers wake people up at night for sahoor, and
most importantly, we gather around large tables with family and friends. The
community spirit becomes incredibly visible during this month. Charity and
giving also become more prominent, strengthening the collective sense of
compassion and solidarity.
For me, a truly
inclusive workplace is one grounded in empathetic curiosity. Colleagues showing
genuine interest in understanding each other’s experiences make a big
difference. I consider myself very fortunate to be part of a team that respects
and values my cultural and religious practices. Small gestures, like arranging
a quiet space for prayer even in our German office, have a significant impact
on how welcomed and respected people feel.”
