Freeweaver Studio @deptfordmktyard : what is it and how does it work? We are an independent creative weaving studio in South East London. Here you can learn how to weave on our handmade Japanese floor looms. We offer a number of mini workshops via @classbento_uk and longer technique based courses via @craftcourses and Eventbrite. Once you’ve completed a workshop in the studio, you’re welcome to use our looms for £20 per hour, all materials included. Our studio is a relaxed creative environment where everyone is welcome to practice mindful textile work in a supportive setting. As well as being a fully equipped weaving workshop, we stock a variety of natural fibres such as wild forest silk, raw jute, khadi cotton and naturally dyed wool. We are also the European stockist for @kosyokunobi ’s Bengala Earth Pigment Dyes

Join us as we get to know Erna, one of our workshop leaders teaching Saori weaving. We talked about her passion for Japan, where she fell in love with this weaving technique, why she loves Deptford, and heard stories of her craft journey. Wecandoo is all about giving independent artists and makers a platform to share their passion and tell their story, so in our new series Crafted Conversations we do exactly that. We ask our artisans about all things craft related, give you some tips along the way, as well as sharing funny and wholesome stories for you to enjoy. This first episode was with @freeweaver_studio and we hope you’ll stick with us for the next one. As a teaser… her current commission involves her best friend’s tooth. 🦷 What questions would you like to ask our maker community? #Wecandoo #craftedconversations #collaboration #weaving #stories #deptfordmarketyard

A lovely piece of freestyle weaving created at the studio recently. Inspired by one of her paintings, this weaver artist designed and created her own warp and continued to weave into it using a variety of in-lay techniques to achieve this delightful result #freeweaverstudio #weavinglondon #warpandweft #artweave #contemporarytextiles

Works created at @freeweaver_studio with artists from @intoart_uk are currently on display at @sothebys during @londoncraftweek supported by @qestcraft For Into Art’s groundbreaking TÉKNE exhibition, textile works were developed through collaborative weaving sessions within the studio environment by Into Art artists. The pieces explore material, structure and process through handweaving. While Freeweaver Studio is taking a short hiatus from presenting its own London Craft Week programme this year, after organising events and participating across the festival for the past eight years, it is wonderful to see work connected to the studio continue to appear within this wider contemporary craft context. Final day of exhibition: Sunday 17 May, 12:00 -17:00, 34-35 New Bond Street, London, no booking required

Repost from @hollyberry_woventextiles • Cloth in the Community. Off-grid independent show during London Craft Week. Keeping it hyper local in the community, and gently sharing and connecting over the rhythms and rituals in life and textiles. Gathering for cake and conversation amongst our gently balanced weavings, framing the space to sit with craft and each other, share a chat and a moment. @freeweaver_studio #craftinthecommunuty #textilestellstories #woventextiles #handwoventextiles #handweaving

Grounding moment of the DYCP! Researching puppet characters from the Saori samples with puppeteer @oliversmartpuppetry Oliver brought hands that know how to read a material body, where it wants to move where it resists , from where a character may emerge. Together we researched the puppet joints within the woven structures. We began exploring how to manipulate and stage them to produce presence and getting closer to a character performance. Thank you Oliver ! Looking forward for more collaboration on puppet characters from textiles! 🙏 thank you again to @freeweaver_studio for training me on the Saori loom and making possible to create the samples. #cdw2026 Come by and discover the mindful craft of weaving at CDW’s Future Talent at The Charter House Throughout the day, I along with @freeweaver_studio will be sharing live weaving demonstrations on very special Japanese Saori Looms and exploring how kitchen waste like banana peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, and other everyday leftovers can be transformed into woven materials and biomaterials through slow, thoughtful making. There’ll be textures to touch, materials to explore, and conversations around sustainability, craft, and storytelling through textiles. If you’re interested in hosting a workshop, collaborating, or simply curious about the process — come say hi ✨

Freeweaver Studio Internship Programme — Open Call Freeweaver Studio is now accepting applications for a small number of internship placements beginning Summer 2026. The studio operates as a public-facing weaving environment centred around an improvisational Japanese floorloom weaving approach, distinct from conventional structured weaving pedagogy and commercial textile production. Internships are intended for individuals with a strong interest in contemporary textile practice, material process, public engagement and collaborative studio environments. Alongside supporting the day-to-day rhythm of the studio, interns will gain insight into exhibition preparation, workshop facilitation, loom preparation, textile installation and process-led weaving methodologies. As the studio operates through a highly specific weaving approach and social working environment, completion of an Introduction to Floorloom Weaving workshop is required prior to internship consideration. This introductory session provides essential familiarity with the looms, studio atmosphere and working methods. Completion of the workshop does not guarantee a successful application. Minimum engagement: two afternoons per week. This is an unpaid internship, participants will have the opportunity to work on three pre-agreed independent projects during the internship period (mid June-mid September. The programme is particularly suited to those interested in: – contemporary craft practice – improvisational weaving – participatory textile environments – material-led process – sustainable textile approaches – public workshop culture and installation practice Applications are now open and will close on 20 May 2026. Weaving Women, a creative workshop and gathering across generations for women 🌼 Inspired by our documentation of a last generation of carpet weavers in Sardinia – who claimed the most precious thing about lifelong craft practice was the relationships it facilitated with other women – this special seasonal gathering will call together women across generations in that same spirit of communion and collective creativity. Together we'll watch a short documentary and hear from the last generation of Sardinian weavers on female friendship and connection through craft. Then, we'll move through a series of creative prompts and exercises to explore the place of collaboration in our own lives and creative practices. I know this is going to be a powerful one, and sincerely hope to see you there ❤️ THE PROGRAMME ~ Curated and facilitated by @issabellaorlando with @freeweaver_studio 🧵 Essay Reading – Between Generations: Women, Craft and the Art of Staying Connected, by @issabellaorlando in Breathe Magazine 🧵 Short Film Screening of By Hand: Sardinia’s Weavers (4 mins) 🧵 Group Reflection – Prompts on the theme of Communion 🧵 Women’s Circle 🧵 Collective Writing Practice – “Exquisite Corpse” poetry exercise, where the group will write a poem together 🧵 Social Gathering DATE & TIME 📆 31 May 2026, 1-3pm 📍 Freeweaver Studio, 7 Carriage Way, Deptford Market Yard, London SE8 4BZ Limited tickets available, 🔗 in bio. Profits will be donated to Empower, a UK charity that supports girls & young women who have lost their mothers.
