Things are moving a little differently at our Sierrita, Ariz. operation.
The site recently rolled out three semi-autonomous drills with operator machine assist technology. By taking care of repetitive tasks, the system helps smooth out workflows, deliver more consistent drill patterns and cut down on the time spent moving from hole to hole.
Before the drills went into service, operators completed hours of classroom learning and hands-on field training. Human oversight is still critical, with crews responsible for site security, collision avoidance, refueling, watering and keeping a close eye on equipment condition to support safe drilling every day.
It is one more example of how Freeport continues to test, learn and apply new ideas to improve how work gets done across our operations.

A robot dog, a haul truck simulator and a chance to see modern mining up close.
That’s what visitors found at our booth during the 10th annual Mining Day at the Capitol in Phoenix. Students, legislators and community members stopped by to learn about mining innovation, take photos and try operating a haul truck and excavator in our simulator trailer.
And yes, Spot the robot dog from Bagdad made an appearance. We’re just a little bit obsessed. 🤖🐾
