Freelingwaters – ‘Vreemdeling welkom’ (2026) De aftrap van het Canvas van Amsterdam wordt verzorgd door kunstenaarsduo Gijs Frieling en Job Wouters (@freelingwaters ). De mural toont een welkomstbord voor de vreemdeling in de ruimste zin van het woord: Amsterdam wordt steeds normaler en heeft VREEMDELINGEN nodig. Daarnaast probeert het werk een aantal belangrijke, gestolen elementen uit de beeldcultuur terug te claimen: de vlag van de nationalisten, de gotische typografie van neonazi’s en het wapen van Amsterdam van de toeristen. In hun eigen woorden: “Wij begrepen direct dat deze plek vraagt om een positieve uitspraak. Op deze plek rijdt een ononderbroken stroom toeristen met rolkoffers langs een rij geïmproviseerde nachtverblijven van dakloze Amsterdammers. Dit roept verwarrende gevoelens op en verwarrende gevoelens dienen welkom geheten te worden. Wir schaffen das! Normaal. Doen. Helpt niet. Daarom hebben we ons welkomstwoord gehuld in de esthetiek van de haringkar met zijn driekleur, gotische letters en krijsende meeuwen. Vreemdeling Welkom!” — Canvas van Amsterdam Vanaf april 2026 is elke zes maanden een nieuw werk te zien in Amsterdam van een Amsterdamse kunstenaars. We just came back from producing our work 'Erbeerfelder fur Immer' at @kunstmuseum_bochum in Germany. Ten people, ten days, ten (!) pigments. It is part of the exhibition 'Das offentliche Grun' which will open this may. The mural is based upon the yellow Submarine, the animation movie from 1968 inspired by the music of The Beatles. Here you see two pieces of some of our favorite artists, painted by some of our favorite artists: Marisol Escobar by @josquinvanelburg , and Folkert de Jong by @renskevanenckevort . We've become increasingly interrested in still life painting ever since we were confronted by a chaekgori style room divider in National Folk Museum in Seoul last year. (Google chaekgori!) Next two weeks we will execute a painted room at @valkhofmuseum were we were asked to work on a painterly reaction on their collection. Shown here are some early studies for this project. All pieces are from the Valkhof Museum. We will work on this piece for 10 days with 10 assistants for 8 hours a day, so that means we'll collectively put some 800 hours of work in this, stay tuned! #freelingwaters #chaekgeori #stilllife

PROJECTROOM #22: FREELINGWATERS EXERCISE IN INTENSITY Après Sophie Taeuber-Arp Very proud to invite Gijs Frieling and Job Wouters from duo @freelingwaters to take over the project room -- I discovered their work while working on PoMo, a museum of modern and contemporary art in Trondheim, Norway . I invited them to work on the murals of the now famous Reading Room, creating a fully ornamented space, which refers to the forgotten Nordic folkloric art - Their work is very poetic and carries a beautiful strangeness I wanted to share with you - About this exhibition : During Paris Design Week 2026, FreelingWaters will present ‘Exercises in Intensity’ in PROJECT ROOM #22 on rue de Bellechasse. FreelingWaters is the artistic duo formed by Gijs Frieling and Job Wouters. In 2024 they collaborated with India Mahdavi on the PoMo museum in Trondheim, where they ornamented the ceilings of the library and reading room. They execute large scale murals, ornament antique cabinets and handcrafted objects, and create hand-painted designs for textiles and hand-lettering at all scales.   ‘Exercises in Intensity’ explores the work of Sophie Taeuber-Arp in the form of hand-painted cabinets, through a new chromatic proposition based on five pigments: Persian red, Sea green, Light ochre, Light and Dark grey. The cabinets will be accompanied by full scale murals in the same pigments.   opening thursday, january 15 6-8:30pm 29 rue de bellechasse 75007 paris

Amare Stories / Monumentale kalligrafie in Amare: welke liedjes herken jij? 👀🎶 Wie de afgelopen weken in Amare rondliep, heeft ze vast gezien: grote, geschilderde muzikale klanken op de muren. Met de serie kunstwerken AH! OH! AH! OH! maakt kunstenaarsduo @freelingwaters een schilderkunstige ode aan gezongen klanken in muziek. Ze gebruikten muziekfragmenten uit allerlei tijden en stijlen, van David Bowie tot de Spice Girls, en als meest recente toevoeging Doechii. Voor dit project ontwierpen de kunstenaars ook een speciaal kalligrafisch lettertype, geïnspireerd op de architectuur van het gebouw. Elke letterdeel werd aangebracht in één vloeiende beweging met hun eigen ontwikkelde verf.
