Really happy to be a part of this project with my sister in the struggle @dalitdiva . The story of Dalit, Adivasis, and Bahujan folks here in the US is a story that I feel needs to be understood by westerners, discrimination based on caste is happening in our communities and it’s time for us to lend our voices in support!
For folks that need the script here it is:
Caste
It’s one of the oldest systems of exclusion in the world
Despite the ban on untouchability seventy years ago
It impacts 1/9 Billion people
Every 15 minutes a crime is perpertrated against a Dalit
The average age of death for Dalit women is just 39
And wreckages of caste are replicated here in the United States too
Erupting online with rape and death threats
Showing up at work
And forcing countless Dalits to live in fear of being outed
It’s easy to fear overwhelmed
By caste pain
And the Polarization
Hatred and bigotry
That has arisen from caste
And yet in the face of all of this violence
I chose to follow the example of the buddha
And to sit
To take this terrible moment of the pandemic as a time to reflect
On how we got here
And what we can do to heal from thousands of years of oppression
The result is my book the Trauma of Caste
A Dalit Feminist Meditation on Survivorship, Healing, and Abolition
I wrote this book so that we could finallly address the Soul wound that is caste
Acknowledge its historical and intergenerational harms
But also so that we can tend to
And let it be a teacher
So we never allow such dehumanization again
It ties Dalit movements to liberation movements around the world
Including historical solidarities with Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian, Feminist, and Queer movements around the world.
Laying bare the grief, rage, and stolen futures inflicted on all of us by caste
It is a love letter to all who would heal from violence
and are committed to a
Visionary future that frees all of us
This book is rooted in the commitment that
the opposite of genocide is to fight for life
And i hope this book is one light out of many to help us out of the darkness
The Trauma of Caste coming November 15, 2022
Astrophysicist, planetary scientist, and a general educator on the subject of science—Neil deGrasse 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. I don’t know what I could say about him that isn’t already much more eloquently described in the second slide. All I can say is that I’m a huge fan of his work and have gained a clearer understanding of the universe and life in general through Neil Degrass Tyson‘s use of science. I encourage people to check out his podcast StarTalk which is accessible through YouTube and other platforms. @neildegrassetyson

bell hooks works have such strength and power coupled with great empathy and love. I appreciate her focus on creating paths to healing, for people of color facing “white supremacist patriarchy“. In her passing she is still a fiery feminist, telling us exactly what we need to hear.

Appreciation post for Black History Month, just want to highlight a few people over the next few days, that I get much inspiration from, starting off with the indelible Cornel West. I don’t post too often, I’ve been thinking about this account lately and I’m going to try and post more. Cornell west has done so much for my life in his analysis and in his empathy. His soul charging presence is infectious and motivating.

I got inspired to create this from Frances Haugens testimony, hopefully it doesn’t get flagged🤞🏽. I use to have a Facebook but felt like I was on it too often and ultimately decided to delete it. The unashed cigarette represents the “suspension of disbelief”, a phrase used to describe what happens to an audience when watching theater, or a movie, or reading a book. It’s that moment where you stop noticing the theater walls, when your eyes and mind are completely locked on the screen, and the narrative becomes your reality.

We are heartbroken for the loss of the irreplaceable giant anti-caste scholar #gailomvedt. She was a powerful founding figure of anti-caste studies working from Maharashtra which would later become her home. Her work helped to make legible to English and foreign audiences the incredible lineages and powerful leaders of anti-caste thought authoring over 25 books, including In Colonial Society – Non-Brahmin Movement in Western India, Seeking Begampura, Buddhism in India, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule, Dalit and the Democratic Revolution, Understanding Caste, We Will Smash the Prison and New Social Movement in India. She also co-founded Shramik Mukti Dal ( the toilers liberation league) along with her husband and activist Bharat Patankar to work on issues of caste oppression, workers and farmers rights. She is survived by Bahujan American activist Prachi Patankar and her partner and her grandaughter as well as millions of bahujan people who were inspired by her powerful legacy. #jaibhim and #jaisavitri #gailomvedt we salute you and your incredible legacy with love and immeasurable respect. From and made for @capoeiristas_for_change “The senseless killing of George Floyd by the murderous cop Derek Chauvin has finally come to a head in a guilty verdict on all charges. This is a hard-won moment to savor and breathe a sigh of relief. We've seen police and vigilantes absolved by the courts for taking the lives of our brothers and sisters; Derek Chauvin's guilty verdict marks a rare occasion where the system turned its back on its own. We send our love and support to the family of George Floyd. This verdict will not bring him back, but hopefully, it will give them a sense of resolve and assuredness that his killer will not be free to roam and have the chance to kill someone else and bring grief and sorrow to another family. Plus, for the many other victims of police brutality, this case can serve as an example, that fighting for justice is not done in vain. Real justice will be the day when no Black or person of color will have to worry about being a victim of state violence and prey to a racist judicial system. Therefore, the movement for change continues. We must still honor those that came before, those that are living now, and the generations to come by making this world, our nation, and communities a better place for all of us to live and thrive. A Luta Continua!”

I rejoice in this win for the people, while also having a heavy heart. The system of racial policing and red lining still exists, and we still have much work to do.

George Floyd, Ma’Khia Bryant, Breonna Taylor, Taylor McDade, Alton Sterling, Sandra Bland — and so many more deserve more than a verdict. We must defund and ultimately abolish the police. #SouthAsiansForBlackLives

Jai Bhim! This year, our theme for #DHM is hope.
We began DHM to celebrate Dalit resistence and resilence--to remind our community that we can build a future beyond atrocity when we know our roots. In that spirit, our theme for this year’s DHM is hope, but this has always been part of what DHM is about. We celebrate Dalit history to better build Dalit futures, and hope how we move this work forward. As Mariame Kaba has famously said, “hope is a discipline.” This means that hope isn’t the opposite of action, but something we commit to every day. The art and events this month will provide stories that give us a radical sense of hope and push us towards action. The last year (and some) have been unending sources of grief. And we have seen caste-oppressed communities innovate power, possibility, and action together.
From a pandemic, combined with an uprising for Black lives, and a movement to stop white supremacist hatred to the ways our communities are being attacked in our homelands, we’ve endured dark times. This Dalit History Month is a reminder to keep a light in the dark, and to move, together, towards that light.

We’re excited to debut this new piece of art “Stop Caste Rape”, by @freedom.makes , created to symbolize the powerful anti-violence and anti-rape work being done by Dalit women across the world, from Hathras to Houston.
We hope you’ll share!
This week, we’ll be bringing attention to the efforts of Dalit women in Haryana as they advocate for better prosecution of sexual violence against Dalit women, and for there to be a global investment in the education of Dait women and girls.
