Here's a moment from our live set at Red Gate last weekend. Coils in full effect. Thanks to @tomasjirku for filming the whole thing! Check our youtube channel for the full 30 minutes
This patch involves sending an 8 step random (unquantized!) voltage loop to the preamp gain control, which translates to pitch on coil feedback pairs. Musical pitch quantization is achieved by setting up two feedback pairs in an arrangement that produces a useful interference pattern. Moving the nuts or screwdriver into the field distorts it, allowing for note transposition.
All sounds are generated by the coils themselves, with some delay added for spice.

Throwing a permanent magnet into the feedback loop. Magnets are very useful for nudging the EM field, as well as sensing what the field is doing. Things get crazy when you bring them into feedback loops, allowing for gestural modulation or ad hoc electroacoustic instruments. #experimentalmusic #sounddesign #audioproduction #eurorack #synth #electromagnetic #modularsynth
Pitch instrument. Sending impulse patterns through several convolution reverb channels (black coils), each tuned to a different note. Input coils can also be pinged with magnets for hands on performance.

New clear panel to see what's under the hood. Black coils are inputs to the DAW

Here's an impromptu jam with 12 coils and a Tascam 16x8 audio interface.
The 4 coils shown act as outputs for playback tracks in Logic, while the 8 coils below the panel act as inputs to various fx channels routed to the stereo out.
Coils play nicely with otherwise fully digital setups, adding analog saturation and performance flexibility.
