And..we pay tribute to my producer of 35 years..the legendary Mel Garcia who passed away last Sunday. It’s all poppin off tonight from 10p-Midnight on the Frazer Smith Show on 95.5 KLOS!!
You may have learned through the grapevine of the passing last night of my dear friend and radio producer Mel Garcia. Mel and I worked together for 35 years on a number of stations...and fought the entire time. No, we were great pals and were able to pull off some of the most entertaining shows to ever grace the LA airwaves. We worked together at KLSX, KMET, and KLOS, Mel was amazing at getting great guests for the program. Over the years he booked and became friends with a string of show biz and sports luminaries...including .. Rod Stewart, Rodney Dangerfield, Weird Al, Bill Burr, Tim Allen, Ice T, Gene Simmons from KISS, Patrick Warburton, Dane Cook, George LopezJon Lovitz, Eliza Shlesinger, LA Gunns, Oingo Boingo, Great White, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, , DLR, Warren Zevon Tex Cobb, the Rams Vince Ferrigamo, and many more. Special thanks goes to our friend and all time favorite the great Alice Cooper and his amazing mgr the Supermench Shep Gordon, who were friends of Mel’s and regulars on the program. Recently Mel ran into actress Alicia Silverstone, another fave, at a memorial ceremony for our old friend legendary director Marty Collner and booked her on the show. He was always on the prowl for great guests.
Mel was also a video director...he worked on some big ones, a producer..and most recently a stand up comic. So glad we got to share the stage at a recent KLOS promoted Hollywood Casino show. And..a special shout out to Mel’s close compadre legendary Latin comedian Paul Rodriguez. Mel was a producer on Paul’s latest film endevor Holy Cash. lifelong Dodger fan..Mel and I sat spellbound as the great Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda regaled us with stories
over Chinese food at his favorite restaurant.
Both Mel and myself felt blessed to be back on the air on Sunday nights ( 10p-Midnight ) on the mighty rock giant 955 KLOS..such an honor to get to rock the LA airwaves once again. I will certainly miss my old buddy...and so will many others..he was a people guy..and everyone who got to know him loved him. We nicknamed Mel the Prince Of Pop...because he was a music historian..who was impossible to stump at music trivia. Goodnight sweet Prince..adios amigo..
