You're warmly invited along to the Reid Hall, Edinburgh on Thursday 18th June to hear a rendition of the Inchcolm Antiphoner (Scotland's oldest known musical manuscript) by a quartet of saxophones. I’m very pleased to share with you this first look at a new project which has at its heart Scotland’s oldest known example of musical notation, the Inchcolm Antiphoner.
The Inchcolm Antiphoner is a collection of songs composed on the small island of Inchcolm, which lies on the Firth of Forth between Fife and Lothian, during the 12th century. The songs are in praise of Saint Columba - the Saint, born in Donegal in 521, who is credited with bringing Christianity to Scotland. Inchcolm: Columba’s Isle.
For this, my final project as Traditional Artist in Residence for the Celtic and Scottish Studies Department of the University of Edinburgh, I’ve arranged the songs of the Inchcolm Antiphoner to be played by a quartet of saxophones. The University of Edinburgh is home to the original manuscript, some fragments can be viewed online, like the example I’ve included here.
The three other saxophonists I have invited to join me are Sue McKenzie, Martin Kershaw and Allon Beauvoisin.
We’ll give a concert in June, in Edinburgh, details soon, and we’re to record the music as well, before long - I’ll let you know as things progress.
Here’s a look at our first rehearsal, with huge thanks Dante Harbridge Robinson who dropped in armed with a camera and his exceptional film-making skills:
