NorthFace Armour (2024)
steel, etching
A handmade armour in the shape of a NorthFace puffer jacket and Adidas pants. A play on modern and classical masculinity, and the capitalist crusade across nations, extracting resources, gathering loyalty.

⤷
An armor for laptop and mouse, based on Kolman Helmschmidt cuirass 1510-20.
Daniel Hopfer's engraving 1510-1520 shows the saints hard at work - St. George fighting the dragon, mother Mary nurturing her child Jesus, St. Christopher carrying the infant through the river. And the cherubs and fanfares that await them in heaven.
But what rest awaits us when this war of life is over? Where do we wage it? And can't this be the site of great bravery too?

Kid Frans Neon (Blood)
acrylic LED neon sign
2026
A series of LED neons of felt-tip drawings the artist made at age five, covering topics such as 9/11, gun crime, crucifixion, and colonial oppression. Seemingly showing a child coming to terms with the violence of the world. In a medium of capitalism famed for stripping away this lofty childhood grandiosity. How such innocence cannot function in a commercial world.
Come by this weekend! From this week on we are open during new opening hours:
Friday and Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00, or by appointment.

Crime and Punishment Jenga
books, wood
2026
A Jenga tower made of custom format copies of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment (1866). This continual global interplay between the two. Law and order, good and evil, innocence and violence. In Dostoevsky’s novel, the most immoral character is a young law student, who is saved by the friendship of a sex worker outcast from society.
Come see Crime and Punishment Jenga and the rest of Machine Wound next week during our new opening hours.
Friday and Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00, or by appointment.

Baby Dutch
LED board, audio (8min)
2026
An Afrikaans children’s story from a 1982 radio broadcast describing the origin of Table Mountain’s iconic cloud formations: a slave trader and the devil having a tobacco smoking contest on Devil’s Peak. Often referred to as ‘baby Dutch’, the Afrikaans language is a stripped down version of Dutch. Verb conjugations, gendered nouns, and excess letters have been jettisoned over the 400 years of colonial violence, stress, miscommunication, memory loss and heat. Regressing to its infant form in the harshness of colonial life.
Come see Baby Dutch and the rest of Machine Wound next week during our new opening hours.

2026
Come by this Easter weekend to see Wound Machine, a solo show by Frans van Hoek.
The exhibition brings together 12 new works departing from a series of six felt-tip drawings he made at the age of five, showing a child seemingly grappling with the violence of the world: terrorism, 9/11, crime, Christ’s crucifixion, and colonial oppression. The works are paired with Jean Cocteau’s La Machine Infernale (1932), in which a protagonist struggles to escape the harsh will of the world, only to perfectly fulfil the dark prophecy laid out to him by the Gods.
Through this double departure, the exhibition explores the strange interplay between innocence and violence through personal, political, and ecological lenses. The endless cycle of wounding and being wounded, unfolding across the millennia. Playfully asking whether it is us or the world that is evil. Whether it is us or the world that is the Wound Machine.
