When they planted last autumn, they had no idea of what would emerge in spring.
Small little fingers growing from the soil, nimble nails grubby from the grab up. They don't move as the things they are at first, a whole crop of hands emerging. Maris and Ada, the growers, check the planting notes, the seed packets they saved and see that under certain circumstances 'seedlings may appear different from those pictured'. Still, when they water the small digits and palms, the fingers unfurl and start to move. All of them, an audience of hands beckoning for moisture. They are not equal pairs, nine fists opening and closing, slowly.
Maris buys clippers, moisturiser, delicate soap, gently washing each of the splayed five fingers, trimming down nails that had grown at an alarming speed in the sun. She moisturises joints, rubbing in high quality cream. The hands curl into themselves, as if in pleasure, touching each finger pad to the thumb.
'Should we take finger prints?' Ada asks, 'Run them through a data base?' Check in case these hands were, or are, attached to humans, hearts, eyes, brains under the soil. No matches found.
Harvest time. Maris and Ada had planted seeds to become more sustainable, know where their food comes from, show it off at the dinner table to friends and pictures online. The hands, the fingers, the nails have turned themselves down, diving back in and under the soil of the bedding box. No room for bodies under there.
Maris and Ada hope to see the hands bloom again, next spring.
