From drop out to speaking @harvard
Most people don’t know my personal life. When I was 18 I was selling cars at Volkswagen Santa Monica while going to USC. That job helped fund my college career while taking on any internship I could.
12 internships in 2 years. Just a young kid hungry to make something out of myself.
Senior year when I was almost done, I woke up one day and decided to transfer to SMU. Only two years of my credits transferred so I became a sophomore again. Made no sense to anyone.
Then at 19 I dropped out and started my first restaurant. I was delusional and believed in what I was doing.
Life and work move fast and it’s hard to ever slow down and really take it in. But moments like this make me so grateful.
Be delusional and have certainty in God.

The homecoming. So excited to bring our first reserve concept to the city of BH. I’ve never worked on something harder or with more passion. This store has over a year of planning behind it, a real pursuit of perfection. From tasting over 700 matcha samples to testing hundreds of roast profiles to perfect our espresso recipe. For the first time, I’ve been able to craft a store that reflects everything I personally love. The cup design and shape, the bar and flow, the plaster, the flooring, every frame and piece of stone, every finish, the uniform, and a simple elevated menu - all of it intentionally chosen. The operation and drink program are built to elevate the experience of coffee and matcha, pushing past boundaries that have been in place for so long, while also tying in the nostalgic flavors of my childhood.
One goal: build America’s greatest coffee shop.
On a personal note, this store is a tribute to a city that had a huge impact on my life. Last slide is a throwback to our first apartment when we moved here - 1 bedroom, 5 people, 4 dogs. It means a lot to come back and create a legacy space on such a special street.

Around 6 years ago La La Land was born. Soon after, Hazel quit her job and joined La La as a graphic designer when we had just 1 store. Our first store - a little house on an off street in Dallas where the delusion began - that La La Land would be the next big brand to revolutionize the industry. (Covid hit 6 months later where even though we only had one store open - I signed 5 new leases) through all the crazy decisions - she’s now been with me through 24 stores and keeps that same gritty and delusional culture alive.
This next phase is a big one. Having an amazing partner like Stripes backing, along side our amazing new advisory board. Im honored to have people I’ve admired in our industry for so long now becoming good friends helping lead La La. Bringing the core of what we were built on to the masses. A crazy past 6 years, yet we have only just begun.
The future is very yellow.
